🆕 Over 80 female and non binary students explored engineering careers and met role models from industry at an event co-organised by Baker Dearing and Network Rail last week. The event, Shaping the future: empowering young women and non-binary leaders in industry, included: 🗣️ A panel discussion featuring female engineers and project managers. 🥸 A workshop on imposter syndrome. 🌉 Bridge-building, where the students worked with Network Rail staff on designs which they then presented to their peers. Students positively engaged with the event, with one saying: "It was an amazing opportunity to explore career pathways in an industry that I thought, prior to this event, was very niche and inaccessible." While women make up more than half of the Canadian population, they only comprise 15% of the engineering profession. This number has risen from 13.5% over the past five years, yet the field remains predominantly male. International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) seeks to address this imbalance by providing a platform for female engineers and encouraging young women to pursue careers in engineering. We spoke with some of our talented female technical staff about their career journeys and how we can inspire more young women to pursue careers in STEAM. "Shifting the UK Engineering Scene! 🚀👷♀️ In the landscape of British engineering, diversity reigns supreme. By amplifying female representation within our teams, we're not just ticking a box for equality; we're unlocking a treasure trove of untapped potential and perspectives. 👩🔧 Diverse teams spur creativity and innovation. With women contributing their unique viewpoints, we're driving collaborative problem-solving and pioneering solutions that might otherwise be overlooked. It's not just about having a different voice but about multiplying the lenses through which we view each challenge. 🌉 Women in engineering also pave the way for stronger economic growth. As per recent studies, gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to outperform their counterparts. In the UK, we're poised for a surge in productivity—if we embrace this inclusive approach. ⚙️ Moreover, representation inspires the next generation. STEM fields in schools are bubbling with curious minds waiting to see role models they can relate to. More female engineers equate to more girls seeing a path for themselves in this exciting domain. Remember, it's not just about filling a quota; it's about enriching our teams and the UK engineering industry at large. Let's capitalize upon the collective genius diversity brings. #EngineeringDiversity #WomenInSTEM #FutureOfEngineering"
