This week, I delivered the first part of my Master Class on English Contract Law in the context of Superyacht Construction Contracts. The open-mindedness of this third cohort of YORP students is life-affirming. Intelligent questions and an instant recalibration of presumptions and assumptions about how the law works show a willingness to learn. What are the biggest takeaways from the Q&A? You, as the owner's rep, are not there to be the shipyard's friend. This does not mean that you are entitled to be hostile, but you need to make sure that the yard delivers what the owner was contractually promised. It's not for you to decide unilaterally that the owner should have asked for something different. How do I view an owner's rep taking a commission to give preference to a supplier or to make things move quickly? Well, that’s a bribe. My second Master Class in December on completing the build, delivery and acceptance is always fun. When is a defect, not a defect? Why is a minor non-conformity, not a warranty item? What are subrogation rights? The course has owners representatives who are both experienced and newbies. Their interactions are wonderfully respectful and drive the learning process. One year ago, I took my first leap—literally. 🪂 Skydiving over Palm Jumeirah was my introduction to a journey that has profoundly shaped my perspective on leadership and growth. Since earning my USPA B License in April 2024, I’ve completed solo jumps that challenge me to trust myself, embrace uncertainty, and stay focused even in the face of fear. Skydiving has taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers or eliminating risk—it’s about preparation, decisiveness, and trusting the systems you’ve put in place. Just like stepping out of that plane, great leadership requires the courage to let go of what’s safe and embrace the thrill of the unknown. Each jump reminds me that growth happens when we push beyond comfort, face the freefall, and trust our ability to navigate through it. Leadership, like skydiving, is about taking those bold leaps that inspire others to do the same.
