♽ The design times, they are a-changin'! And this is very true for modern designers, as we widen our minds to the damage our human-centred-amazingness has done, whilst simultaneously grappling with new tools and mindsets to steer us toward a safer, more inclusive, more planet-symbiotic future. Here are six design practices that could help us reach that future that expand design to be more critical and challenge perceptions, consider human activity as part of ecosystems, and contribute to transitioning humanity to become a healthier part of the planetary ecosystem. Some of these practices have been around for decades but are still ‘emerging’ into mainstream design, while others are new and just finding their legs—but all eschew purely human and commercial goals in favour of more collaborative, inclusive, holistic and sustainable approaches. (Since writing this article, my perspective has evolved to believe that all these practices combine with others to form the overall framework of life-centred design.) #lifecentreddesign #pluriversaldesign #criticaldesign #speculativedesign

In collaboration with BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), Human Space has developed the Inclusive Visualizations Guideline to encourage creators to produce visuals that truly depict society by being mindful about the stories they convey to clients and interested parties. It’s easy to fall into the trap of depicting what we are familiar with, but as designers, we must reflect the diverse range of our communities and clients. We can challenge socially embedded biases by drawing and presenting diversity in our work. Our Inclusive Visualizations Guideline aims to make inclusivity a critical component of the production process, rather than an optional addition, to ensure that the visual communications are diverse and inclusive. YO, DESIGNERS... I've long been impressed by how you work - particularly your sense of community, methods and general way of working. Design Thinking. Sprints/Jams Empathy-led practice. Accessibility-first principles. Even things like week notes. These are all things you do way better than the sustainability community (Sorry fellow sustainability pros).
