Have you taken the time to connect with nature recently? Green spaces can either be urban (parks and backyards) or natural environments (eg forests) and blue spaces covers areas where you’re exposed to water (eg beaches, rivers and lakes). People who increase their exposure to green and/or blue spaces are less likely to report symptoms of depression and may improve stress, quality of life and your general mood. There is no specific amount of time required in nature to yield the benefits, so simply increasing the amount of time you spend is a great place to start. We recommend starting by thinking about what green or blue spaces you’re already exposed to and if you can spend more time there? And if you want to branch out into some new spaces, think about what is convenient – you're more likely to sustain something when it’s easy to action. Is there a park on your way home from work? Can you change your daily walk to spend more time in a park? Nature connection is one of the modifiable lifestyle components that is incorporated in lifestyle medicine associated with mental health. If you’re a health professional looking to integrate the principles of lifestyle medicine into your practice we’ve brought together clinicians, academics and those with lived experience to create a 3-week course that provides you with the support you need to implement lifestyle medicine to aid in the assessment and management of mental illness, recovery and wellbeing.
