France is struggling politically, New Caledonia is licking its wounds and French Polynesia is tempted by new perspectives. How can we envisage the future of the French presence in the Asia-Pacific? This is what we discussed yesterday in Paris with Jean Luc Le Bideau, Vice-President of the France Pacific Territories Economic Cooperation Committee (FPTPEC). Admittedly, the geopolitical situation is not exactly rosy, and the looming trade war is likely to increase our difficulties. However, we believe that it is still possible to create momentum, cooperation and solidarity between the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, working closely with France and, through France, with Europe. This is precisely what we tried to do with Nicolas Miailhe at a seminar last September in San Francisco on the governance of Artificial Intelligence, and again in November in Tahiti on the project for a digital twin of the Ocean and its planned extension to the Pacific. We shall be doing the same next year in the areas of food security, free access to strategic materials, energy and oceans. Stay tuned! #France #Asia #Pacific

Check out our new policy paper, "A Sea of Opportunities: The EU, China, and Mediterranean Connectivity," and join the Luiss Mediterranean Platform in rethinking Europe's role in global and Mediterranean connectivity! 🌍 🚢 This month marks the third anniversary of the EU's Global Gateway. The €300 billion infrastructure initiative was launched with great fanfare as the EU's flagship geopolitical and geoeconomic project in a world of competing and overlapping connectivity models. Reflecting a new understanding of competition, the focus of governments is now pivoting toward increasing global connectivity through societal links and infrastructure alongside formal state-based political ties. Along these lines, a key objective of the Global Gateway is to offer developing countries in Africa and elsewhere the possibility of building sustainable and secure connections; a European connectivity model as an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, the Mediterranean—Europe’s strategic backyard—has received relatively little attention from this initiative. Less than 8% of its dedicated resources, amounting to €24 billion in investments, have been mobilized within the southern Mediterranean region so far. Meanwhile, MENA countries have continued to enhance their collaboration with China, receiving approximately 23% of all BRI investments by 2023, up from 16.5% the previous year. Notably, much of this surge is concentrated in Gulf countries. Against this backdrop, many observers argue that the Mediterranean is a critical space for the Global Gateway to demonstrate its ability to offer competitive and valuable connections, especially considering the flagrant infrastructual deficit of MENA countries and the the rise of importance of the southern neighborhood as both an energy provider and a destination for nearshoring for Europe. 🔗Read more here: https://bit.ly/3ZvtdGK This paper builds on a body of invaluable previous publications of European Council on Foreign Relations (Mark Leonard, Alberto Rizzi & Arturo Varvelli); ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (Valeria Talbot & Alessandro Gili); ECDPM 🌍 (Chloe Teevan & San Bilal); Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS); European Institute of the Mediterranean; The Clingendael Institute; European Parliamentary Research Service; TOChina Hub's ChinaMed, and many others. #Mediterranean #Connectivity #BRI #GlobalGateway #Geopolitics #Mediterranean #Nearshoring #GlobalValueChains

Copenhagen or “Buy a Harbour”? The Danish capital Copenhagen’s name, København, can be divided into the three Danish words “Køb En Havn”. Directly translated these three words mean “Buy A Harbour”. And while the harbour might not be for sale, the three words hint at the city’s historical legacy as an important hub for local, regional, and latest international trade. A legacy that is carried on by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Councils around the globe, where we are working to promote Danish innovation, know-how, and business opportunities in the international market. Because in a world where regional collaboration, natural disasters, and political climates influence the global agenda, traditional and economic diplomacy have never been more important. Grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the event on European Competitiveness, organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Rome and Europe Unlocked, and thanks to the Students Diplomatic Association (LUSDA) of Luiss University for making it possible. The discussions, held on Monday in the stunning venue of Sala delle Colonne at Luiss Viale Pola, were enlightening. Opening remarks by Professor Raffaele Marchetti and H.E. Jan Björklund set the stage for a deep dive into the topic. The panel discussion moderated by Giovanna Pancheri, featuring Christian Danielsson, Marco Canaparo, Anna Stellinger and Matteo Borsani, highlighted the need for the next College of EU Commissioners to prioritize economic opportunities, particularly focusing on boosting the growth of SMEs operating within the Single Market. Much emphasis was put on the recent report by Enrico Letta on the Future of the Single Market, which underscores the urgency of addressing Europe’s lower economic productivity levels to ensure competitiveness on a global scale. It is clear that the next EU mandate will play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges and creating a more competitive and further integrated market. Excited to see how these discussions shape the agenda moving forward. #EuropeanCompetitiveness #EUCommission #EconomicGrowth #EuropeUnlocked

The current geopolitical implications for the region, along with energy spikes and increasing food prices, are driving the world into a multi-faceted crisis. Mankind is sailing through troubled and uncharted waters. Adding to the aforementioned challenges, there are also concerns about new refugee flows owing to the current conflicts and Europe’s security architecture. Reinforcing Europe’s unity and solidarity in the midst of this turmoil is ongoing. Governments, institutions and civil society should cooperate more closely with key stakeholders in order to mitigate the current crisis, underpin social cohesion and achieve stability and recovery for Europe. Against this setting, Romania has a strategic role to play as the country emerges as a key player for Europe’s collective security and NATO’s strategy with regards to Ukraine’s war with Russia. On the business front, Romania’s recent achievements in attracting strategic foreign investments and promoting innovation can serve as a role model and a positive narrative for other central and eastern European countries. Within this context, Economist Impact (Economist Impact SE Europe Events) has great pleasure in announcing the organisation of the Fourth Romanian Business & Investment Roundtable entitled "Shaping a new narrative for prosperity and growth" on April 3rd–4th, 2024, in Bucharest. US foreign policy and international economic strategy have neglected Latin America for decades - perhaps overconfidently figuring the Americas would perpetually remain our sphere of dominance. Now with the border increasingly sealing up, the trend is accelerating, so it's hardly surprising that our neighbors are looking elsewhere for new economic partnerships, and China is happy to invest. American isolationism is rapidly becoming a direct and festering liability against our future.

Russia, Mongolia looking at expanding air service — minister Russian Minister of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov noted that the task is at the level of transport ministries VLADIVOSTOK, September 5/ Russia and Mongolia are looking at organizing additional flights from Ulaanbaatar to Russia’s Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk and launching air service between Ulaanbaatar and Vladivostok, Russian Minister of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov said. "We have set this task at the level of transport ministries and our colleagues are now working on it. Not only flights between Ulaanbaatar and Moscow. We are discussing with the Mongolian side additional air flights to Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk, as well as flights between Ulaanbaatar and Vladivostok," Kozlov, who is also a co-chair of the Russian-Mongolian intergovernmental commission, told TASS on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). He admitted however that Mongolia is not a very popular tourism destination for Russians, mainly due to insufficient direct flights. The Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is underway on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok on September 3-6, 2024. The main theme of the EEF in 2024 is "Far East 2030. Combining strengths to create new potential." The EEF is one of the largest international conferences in Russia. It has been held in the Primorsky Region’s Russky Island in Vladivostok since 2015. The Forum is the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who decreed that the event be held annually. The forum's objectives and goals include promoting the accelerated growth of Russia’s Far East region; assessing its potential for exports; expanding international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region; showcasing the investment appeal of the region, its steadily progressing territories, and the Vladivostok free port. The Roscongress Foundation has served as the Forum’s organizer since 2016. TASS is the general information partner of the EEF. #business #finance #financialservices
