How to Manage Your Reactive Dog I've trained dogs across six countries 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇩🇪🇬🇷🇳🇱🇹🇹 Therefore, I've seen firsthand how reactivity can turn walks into stressful experiences. If your dog reacts every time you pass another dog, here's how focusing on your own dog will make a HUGE difference: → 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴: Many owners watch other dogs instead of their own, missing the signs of impending reactions. → 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀: Learn your dog's body language to anticipate and prevent outbursts. → 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: Correct your dog immediately when you notice signs of reactivity. → 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿: Consistent corrections help your dog understand that reacting isn't acceptable when encountering other dogs. → 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿: When your dog doesn't react to other dogs or triggers when you pass them, reward them immediately. By staying attentive and proactive, you can turn stressful walks into enjoyable outings for both you and your dog. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆? Big dogs especially need focus training to keep things safe. Jumping or fighting can quickly get out of hand. I’ve seen owners knocked down and dragged. Not fun at all.

especially important with our large powerful rottweilers. a one or two word verbal reassurance works with them.

Thank you! This was very helpful. I was looking at the other dog. I will start doing this immediately when we walk. You are the best!
