To succeed in scaling, you have to get the people leadership right. Running a small organization means you often wear more hats than the one you love. ➡️ If you started the company, you may love discussing your product or service. ➡️ If you’re leading a non-profit, you might love talking about the organization's mission with people in the community. You may love having a team of people working with you to make the organization run. You’ve hired great people, and you want them to stay and be productive. You may consider yourself a people person, but that doesn’t mean that’s the part of the job you feel most comfortable doing. Though rewarding, leading people is complicated and often lonely. The support I find that founders and CEOs of smaller organizations need most fall into these categories: 📌 Getting clearer on how they share expectations and then creating accountability 📌 Being willing to give up control and delegate 📌 Setting the team up for success 📌 Needing a sounding board to play out different ways to handle people interactions – staff, clients, or board members 📌 Holding the mirror up for them when how they’re showing up isn’t aligned with their stated intentions Leading people requires understanding yourself and others and then tailoring your response appropriately. This work requires intentionality, and having someone there to coach and advise on the journey is helpful.
