"Ignorantia facti excusat" is a Latin phrase that means "ignorance of fact is an excuse". This legal principle holds that a person who is unaware of a fact may be excused from liability or consequences if they can prove that their ignorance was reasonable and not due to negligence or willful blindness. In other words, if a person commits a wrong or breaks a law because they were unaware of a specific fact, they may be able to avoid liability if they can show that: 1. They were not aware of the fact 2. They had no reason to know the fact 3. They took reasonable steps to find out the fact This principle is often applied in criminal law, tort law, and contract law, where a person's ignorance of a fact may be a defense to a claim or charge. Note that "ignorantia facti excusat" is different from "ignorantia juris non excusat", which means "ignorance of the law is no excuse". While ignorance of a fact may be an excuse, ignorance of the law is not.
