THE MAJOR SCALE #pianobasics 22 The major scale is one of the most fundamental concepts in music theory. It is a diatonic scale consisting of seven notes and follows this pattern of whole steps (W) and half steps (H) between each note: W-W-H-W-W-W-H. where: W stands for whole step and H stands for half step Eg. in the key of C major, the scale consists of the following notes: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. A tetrachord is a series of four consecutive notes spanning the interval of a perfect fourth. In the context of the major scale, the tetrachord system (a concept used in Greek music theory) helps to illustrate how the scale is constructed. The major scale can be viewed as two tetrachords separated by a whole step. For example, in the key of C major, the first tetrachord consists of the notes C-D-E-F, and the second tetrachord consists of the notes G-A-B-C. With the understanding of the relationship between the major scale and the tetrachord system it is easy to analyze and memorize major scales in different keys at a glance which helps insight into the structure and organization of music generally. This is a MUST to create consistent low end mixes. For those who like to practice and/or still honing your skills. Most people think to get a low end bass thump, we need to boost the heart of that (which is typically in the 100hz octave range). WRONG First, practice you ear training on these lower octaves via thirds or critical bands. There is SO much information between 100-400hz; and almost everything has a presence there, but all cannot take up the same space. Next, identify the congruence and differences between these instruments with your frequency analyzer or spectrogram. Once you see where the heart of each are, you can start some subtractive EQ. *insert various fab filter EQ match tricks, etc. Last, the low end isn’t what makes the bass thump and boom bap. It’s the contrast; not only between bass and kickin the low end, but next you need to focus on the 2-3 octaves above that to now ensure your attacks are not being masked. Ultimately, if your bass isn’t hitting, it’s not about boosting that zone, it’s more about your ability to clear the space. Both low and higher octaves. It’s deceiving to think you’ll get better bass by focusing on 400hz-1600hz but, it’s true #audioengineer #mixingengineer #audioengineer #mixengineer #masterengineer #masteringengineer #audioproduction #mixingandmastering #sounddesigner #producer
