The United States spends approximately $12,900 per person on healthcare costs which is double the cost of other industrialized nations. That spending generates health outcomes which are considerably worse than most other nations. One of the drivers of high costs is the inefficiency in our system as evidenced by the chart below. While it is popular to criticize the federal government for waste and inefficiency our extremely high administrative costs are due in large part to the fact that the US does not have a single payer system. While I am not suggesting that is the right answer our current system for paying for healthcare has led to massive inefficiencies which need to be addressed.
