#technocapitalism  What is the impact of global technocapitalism on our cities and societies? 👁️ 🏙️ Join us next Wednesday, 20 November, 6.30 pm, Langstrasse 200, for the #LUSTalk «Silicon Valley Imperialism» by Erin McElroy and Hanna Hilbrandt Prof. Erin McElroy presents the recently published book «Silicon Valley Imperialism» which reveals the technocapitalist mechanisms that overshadow societies and spaces and create socio-spatial and income inequalities in our cities. Prof. Hanna Hilbrandt will relate this phenomenon to the Swiss context. The lectures will be followed by a discussion. | LUS Talks is a public lecture series that addresses critical questions in landscape and urban studies. This year, we explore the spatial challenges and societal changes arising from current breakdowns: disruptive moments in ecological processes and urban systems. What is falling apart and why? Who offers alternatives to these failing structures, and how do they sustain themselves when routine returns? We will examine how practices are transformed and discuss ways to resist, care for, and ultimately regrow from the remnants of the past. How can we take better care of our cities, each other, our environment, and our planet? The Radical Care for the City week at Tampere University in October 2025 will explore this crucial question through a series of conferences and events.   Radical Care for the City Week 2025 📅 Dates: 27-31 October 2025 📍 Location: Tampere University, Tampere, Finland   During the week, we ask how – instead of continuous growth on the one hand and demolition and destruction on the other – we can nurture and cherish our built, social, and ecological urban environments. In the current world situation, this question is radical, as it sets empathy before hate and collective responsibility before profit. Hence, we need a radical shift in the way we care for our cities.    The Radical Care for the City week features two conferences (ATUT and Re-City) and other events, all focusing on the questions of care and the city. I am excited to announce that I will be participating as a speaker at the Changing Cities VI International Conference next Tuesday, June 25, in Rhodes Island, Greece. At this conference, I will be presenting my research study, “Urban Evolution and Tech Optimism: A Dialectic of City Planning and Utopia” which examines the factors shaping contemporary ideas of urban utopia and the characteristics of the ideal city—particularly in the context of the environmental crisis and current urban planning capabilities. My research explores emerging technologies, current trends, practices, and tools in urban planning, with a case study of the MIT Media Lab Radar Plot applied in the center of Athens, Greece. This year's theme, "Climate Crisis: Cities’ Transitions Towards Smart & Green Development," underscores the urgent need for smart, sustainable urban solutions. I look forward to contributing to discussions on sustainable, resilient, and equitable cities, smart technologies, and climate change. Moreover, I am thrilled to engage with leading experts and practitioners dedicated to sustainable urban transformation. Cities need to rethink their purpose. While many iconic city builders in the past century had somewhat great ideas (even Corbusier), they also laid the baseline that cars would dominate cities for decades to come. And this unfortunately is true until today. Even in the most attractive cities in the world such as Zurich and Barcelona, cars are everywhere. While we need to move around in cities swiftly, and we like to think of the 15 minute city, where everything is reachable within a quarter of an hour at most, we mainly need to think about on how we can regain space and turn it into green public zones. Biophilic Cities is an advocate of connecting cities with nature again and Tim Beatley has done some fabulous groundwork and published numerous scientific articles on the topic. In Switzerland, Zeropolis wants to further expand those initiatives with urban transformational concepts that place its citizens in the center and give them the necessary framework for new and groundbreaking smart mobility concepts and places where new work models can evolve and breathe. If you care about how the future of our cities should look like, take a look at Biophilic Cities and have a look at our Zeropolis whitepaper that envisions to transform a city in Switzerland that has been lacking progress. Now, we can all sit around and complain how congested and polluted our cities are or we can take action and move towards a new mindset. InnoArch is celebrating a milestone collaboration! We're excited to share the seed we have planted in the past months with CODEsign for COEXistence (CODE-COEX): The framework for scaling Biocities with nature-based solutions for planetary well-being. A remarkable collaborative effort towards internationalization. Partners from five European countries—Norway, Portugal, Spain, Poland, and Finland—formed a multidisciplinary team of architects, ecologists, health experts, and city planners, united with a shared vision. Together, we established a common ground for creating resilient, sustainable "Biocities." Our goal is to promote planetary well-being by integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and New European Bauhaus (NEB) values into urban planning. These initiatives focus on restoring biodiversity, adapting to climate change, and enhancing the quality of life for all species. In a short time, we created  a cohesive framework across Europe, demonstrating the power of international cooperation and innovative thinking. Women of the NEB had a pleasure to co-create our exhibition with world #collaborators at the #neweuropeanbauhausfestival We go with another part of them! ⚫ Soumaya Majdoub is an Author, PhD Researcher with a multidisciplinary background. She is also the Founder of Women In Urbanism. Her book that was at our exhibition was on ‘Consumeren Als Konijnen’ (Consuming Like Rabbits). “The Myth of Overpopulation where I correct the dominant narrative on overpopulation and shift attention to the core of the (climate) problem: overconsumption and the need for a paradigm shift.” Her doctoral research project is about migration and Malthusian thinking.
