Apprenticeships are accelerating California’s economic growth — and the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network is one of our grantees leading the charge. Last month, California announced an incredible $24.7 million investment in 65 registered apprenticeship programs, including healthcare and automotive initiatives supported by LAUNCH, to supercharge growth in non-traditional sectors across the state. This investment will help equip Californians with high-demand skills and open new career pathways across industries, while building a steady pipeline of skilled talent for employers.   Governor Newsom has identified apprenticeships as a core strategy to create jobs and address income inequality and the state set a goal to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029. Did you know California is rolling out more funding to support the expansion of apprenticeships to new industries? Apply before April 17. CA is leading the nation in fostering inclusive workforce development through apprenticeship programs that offer pathways to career advancement. This helps meet the needs of more employers and create more “earn and learn “pathways for job seekers. $75 Million in Funding is now available! This second round is to support apprenticeship program sponsors associated with the Interagency Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (IACA). These sectors include healthcare, transportation, education, advanced manufacturing, information technology and every sector outside the building and fire trades. California Community Colleges have just released an insightful report, "The State of Apprenticeships in California: Growth and Learnings from the Golden State." Next week (May 5- 11) is Youth Apprenticeship Week (YAW), a nationwide celebration that highlights the benefits and value of #RegisteredApprenticeship program opportunities for youth, ages 16–24. Employers, educators, labor unions, workforce professionals, and their partners across the country are launching Registered Apprenticeship programs that allow youth to earn competitive wages while obtaining the relevant training and experience to start their careers, often including the opportunity to earn college credit. Apprenticeship degrees have so much potential to provide a path to upward mobility & overcome critical workforce shortages! We can couple the best of higher ed with the job-embedded skills the workforce needs — all while overcoming the barriers & expenses that traditionally lock folks out. BUT. . . This shift requires a bold openness to innovation. We will kill it & claim it died of natural causes if we don’t work together to create an environment where the apprenticeship degree has a chance to thrive. #apprenticeshipdegree

Last week was the 10-Year Anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) celebrated by recognizing the impact of Registered Apprenticeships on the state’s workforce and economy. According to the 2024 Women in the Michigan Workforce Report, the percentage of women enrolled in registered apprenticeships is slowly increasing, but has a aways to go. By providing a hub dedicated to registered apprenticeship opportunities for employers and employees, LEO keeps Michigan’s workforce one step ahead and equips the women of Michigan to explore these nontraditional career paths and step into high paying jobs. The latest episode offers some history on apprenticeship at the federal level and brings the conversation to teacher apprenticeship in Colorado. According to the Women in the Michigan Workforce report, in 2023, there were just 600 women in construction and just under 400 women in manufacturing registered apprenticeships. This made-up 5.1% and 10.2% of total active registered apprentices in these industries. Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) is an organization that increases the number of women in construction skilled trades by administering the Apprenticeship Readiness Program (ARP). In this 16-week program, apprentices learn the fundaments and basic skills through a combination of classroom and hands-on activities. Graduates of a WIST ARP are guaranteed an interview with one of our sponsoring Building Trades Unions, to join their Apprenticeship Program, where they can continue their on-the-job training while getting paid.
