I cannot get over this book. It proposes that consciousness is a pattern. You have atoms arranged into molecule patterns, cell patterns, organ patterns, etc. all the way up. But nothing new actually emerges in any of these layers. It's all about levels of description, like in a Mandelbrot set. In between theoretical examples and some hands-on math, Hofstadter wrote these beautiful pieces of fiction that let readers experience these transitions in a way that's not purely intellectual. We're trying to achieve a TINY TINY bit of that in our game. In the Third Pill, you navigate three layers of reality.
