Day 3 of 12 Days of Giving Back at Christmas: Embracing Kindness in Retail Ok, a slight deviation from profiling businesses giving back... this time, I'm encouraging customers to give back and it really doesn't take much. This message is: Just be kind! While we often focus on giving tangible gifts, it's equally important to offer kindness and patience, especially towards those working tirelessly in retail and hospitality. Having experienced working on the frontline myself, and with my son currently working at KFC, I understand firsthand how frequent and challenging customer interactions can be during this busy period. Sadly, I don't think he realised how cruel people could be until he started working in retail. Recognising this, a coalition of our industry groups—including the Shopping Centre Council of Australia (SCCA), National Retail Association, and the AACS (Australian Association of Convenience Stores) —has launched the 'Be Kind in Retail' campaign. This initiative aims to combat the alarming levels of abuse and violence against retail workers, urging the community to show respect and understanding. The campaign's central message, "Kindness Never Goes Out of Style," encourages us all to be considerate towards security officers, cleaners, and retail staff, especially during the hectic Christmas trading period. Advertisements are being displayed across more than 300 shopping centres and 3,500 digital screens nationwide, spreading this vital message. It's disheartening to note that over 92% of retailers have reported instances of verbal or physical assault against their staff. This statistic underscores the importance of campaigns like 'Be Kind in Retail' in fostering a safer and more respectful shopping environment. As we continue our "12 Days of Giving Back at Christmas" series, let's remember that giving back isn't just about material gifts and greater initiatives supporting plaent and people; it's also about the kindness and patience we extend to those around us. By treating retail workers with the respect they deserve, we contribute to a more compassionate cohesive community. So just breathe and enjoy your Christmas shopping experience! I frolicked in the rain on Friday night in Melbourne while shopping and taking in all the City of Melbourne Christmas lights, windows and frivolity, feeling so very grateful. I have children, so I have to pretend to like Christmas. 🎄 But what I really don’t like is "Christmas" appearing in shops as early as October. Sometimes even September! However, when I caught up with the elves that make the magic happen, I began to understand why they have to start so early. 🛍️ Christmas is a critical time of year for retailers. In the United States, it's estimated that one-fifth to one-quarter of annual retail sales occur during the Christmas/holiday shopping season. Considering the global popularity of the Christmas tradition, it is estimated that Santa Claus receives over a billion letters every year from children (and even some adults) from every corner of the world. And, would you believe it, some cheeky children send more than one letter! 😳 That’s a lot of data—names, nicknames, addresses, details on houses with or without chimneys, lengthy gift lists—and, of course, every child must be matched to the ‘naughty or nice’ list before the troop of manufacturing, fulfilment, and logistics elves can get started. (I can’t quite believe I just Googled the collective noun for elves—and that one actually exists! 🧝) Without a robust master data management process, we know it would take forever to manually sort that data, validate addresses, deduplicate letters, and ensure the right toy is assigned to the right child!
