Corporate wellness speaker (alcohol, stress, burnout) I Counsellor at Isabella Ferguson Counselling I De-Stress for Success Podcast host I Not Drinking Today Podcast co-host I Recovered lawyer!
I was absolutely thrilled to be a guest on Tribe Sober’s Podcast with Janet Gourand at the helm, together with Kathryn Elliott and Nicci talking about workplace drinking culture, a subject I am passionate about changing one conversation at a time. I am incredibly grateful to Janet for facilitating this important discussion.
As a former lawyer, who actively participated (if not often led the charge) in the workplace binge drinking cultures that I was involved in, I can recall alcohol played a major role in “helping me” manage the stress, cope with networking and fitting in with my team. I recall having a few before presentations for “Dutch courage” and waking up with hanxiety and regret after several work functions.
In my present career as an alcohol, stress and burnout counsellor, I’ve noticed:
👉 High-pressured environments naturally attract employees that are prone to anxiety, low mood and depression due to perfectionistic traits, vocal inner-critics, imposter syndrome and competitive drive which is exacerbated with late hours, pressure, financial stress, work-life imbalances
👉 Alcohol is used as a quick fix for EVERYTHING, from stress relief, Dutch courage, networking, group bonding, to both get to sleep and give energy
👉 Alcohol fuels stress, burnout, anxiety and depression
👉 Alcohol use disorders breed in environments where there is fear of reputation damage and a culture that works hard / plays hard
👉 Younger employees increasingly do not want to drink in the workplace (and compromise their personal time) but fear obliged to do so in certain environments
👉 Employees often face negativity and judgment by leadership towards those that choose to drink slowly or none at all (recently I heard an employee overhear a partner say “if you are not drinking at a work event you must have a problem”!)
On the flip side, I have also heard many clients say that going alcohol free has given them an edge in the workplace and has become their superpower, aiding focus, memory retention, energy, motivation and client bonding. This is the message that I think workplaces should be promoting.
I am certainly not advocating an alcohol-free workplace! But I do think a whole lot more can be done to improve Australian workplace cultures to support inclusive drinking choices, to promote the career-enhancing benefits of mindful drinking and to provide meaningful support for anyone who is sober curious or worried about their drinking to take a break from alcohol.
Do take a listen to this Tribe Sober pod cast episode. It's a great one.
Also, if your workplace would like a webinar on mindful drinking or how to take a 30-day break and change your drinking habits in the long term, do not hesitate to get in contact with me. This is what I love doing! I often work with Kathryn Elliott and we can also be engaged as a team.
Tribe Sober's latest podcast episode is all about Corporate Drinking Cultures... all the companies I worked at during my career had the "work hard, play hard" culture - what about yours? You can listen to the episode via Apple or Spotify of watch the video here https://lnkd.in/d8ZUctwU

How to Reframe a Mistake ✍️
Rather than looking for someone to blame, use mistakes as a lesson! Companies that haven't done this deeper work tend to rely on blame rather than thinking of something negative in a positive way. Think!
