Founded in 2021 and based in Cambridge, MA, Lydian is developing a novel process to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals from captured CO2, water, and renewable electricity. 🚢💨 Green Marine (UK) Ltd’s Hydrogen-Powered Crew Transfer Vessels Get the Green Light from RINA! 🌿🔋 Green Marine UK’s innovative initiative to retrofit crew transfer vessels (CTVs) with hydrogen and fuel cells has received approval in principle (AiP) from RINA, marking a significant milestone for Project Verdant. This project aims to reduce emissions in offshore wind farm servicing by integrating a hybrid system of hydrogen fuel cells and electric motors with existing diesel engines. This hybrid approach will enable vessels to operate with zero emissions at slow speeds, potentially cutting CO2 emissions by up to 30% and NOx emissions by up to 40%. 🌊⚡ Jason Schofield, Managing Director of Green Marine UK, expressed that obtaining AiP was a crucial objective for Project Verdant, providing confidence in the CTVs' ability to operate safely under UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) regulations and RINA rules. “With technical feedback supplied by RINA we now have all the necessary input to progress to the detailed design and implementation phase,” Schofield said. “Retrofitting CTVs in the manner prescribed by Project Verdant provides a means of significantly de-risking the implementation and testing of hydrogen fuel-cell vessels in the coastal environment.” 🌍 🛳 The project, funded by Innovate UK, is supported by Waves Group Ltd and the EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre, with E'nergys contributing to the design and engineering, and EMS | Engineered Marine Systems supplying the battery room design. 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧, part of the 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩, aims to leverage its expertise in hydrogen, LNG, wind, and ammonia to develop sustainable maritime solutions, including ammonia-powered vessels, in collaboration with 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐀𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬. 𝐆𝐂𝐌𝐃’s recent ammonia transfer trials at the Pilbara region demonstrate the feasibility of ammonia bunkering, setting the stage for future port readiness. Both partners are also advancing onboard carbon capture systems, with 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 receiving 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 (𝐀𝐢𝐏) for its technology from the 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲. 𝐆𝐂𝐌𝐃’s recent study on carbon capture retrofits shows emissions reductions of up to 20%, though further regulatory and infrastructure development is needed.
