A very interesting story from Euronews about white or green roofs to help cool down cities, which also makes a very good point about the ecological opportunities for green spaces – bees and orchids are just two examples of species which love an unvisited roof space. Today is the UN’s World Environment Day. A day when we celebrate our unique planet but also draw attention to the challenges we have. This year’s theme is ’Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’. One way to make better use of the available land is to build on height and in order for it to function optimally, a lift is an important building block. The city of Klagenfurt in Austria has been smart and livable for quite a while! Officials recently launched a digital twin to help them understand how properties within the city are utilized. The 3D model shows how valuable individual plots of green space are for the urban area’s climate. The application also provides information to assess if photovoltaic and solar thermal systems can be installed on building surfaces and goes as far as calculating the effect of the shadows cast by each individual tree, in summer and in winter, to give a precise calculation of the solar energy potential of each Klagenfurt home and business.
