People make NKT and are crucial to our strong performance and corporate culture. Meet Magnus L Hoffstein, Project Director in the #highvoltage business and a Connector of a green tomorrow. He is a key enabler of the success of some of the large #powercables projects and great example of the career possibilities NKT offers. From Västervik to engineering I was born and raised in Västervik, Sweden, and my first contact with Karlskrona was when I did my military service in the navy, in the mid-eighties. Thereafter I ended up in Stockholm and worked as a computer service engineer. After three years in Stockholm I was done with the big city and I felt an urge to start studying again, so I headed to Linköping where I studied engineering physics and electrical engineering, and left there with a master's degree. After I had finished my studies in the beginning of the nineties, I ended up in Karlskrona once again and got a job as a systems engineer at Karlskronavarvet (Kockums), where I worked with stealth technology and integration of various sensor and electronic systems for military vessels. How did you join NKT? In the year 2000 it was time for me to try something else, and when I was offered a job at a department for technical marketing support at ABB High Voltage Cables, I couldn't say no. I started to work with the technical aspects of our tenders, and after a reorganization I was given full responsibility for complete tenders for #HVDC and large subsea cable projects. I worked with Estlink, Stora Bält, BritNed, Gjöa etc. and quite a few FEED studies and budget quotations, which several years later led to really big projects. Transferring to project management In 2007, I started to work as Project Manager of the Gjöa project, which was a really challenging pioneer project for dynamic high-voltage cables. After that I have worked with a number of exciting subsea cable projects, where NordLink has been my biggest project so far. I think being a project manager is incredibly satisfying, since you get to work with large parts of your own organization as well as with clients and sub-contractors, and there is never a dull day at work. What does it mean for you to be a NKT Connector? I like the wide field of working areas that we combine in our projects. I'm also very proud of working for a company delivering projects to connect renewable energy for the future. As a project manager, I connect experts from our and the customers project teams, to deliver high-tech projects towards our customers satisfaction. What do you do when you are not at NKT? Me and my wife live in a house on Verkö in Karlskrona and we have two adult daughters. I like all forms of outdoor activities and we do a lot of trekking. Two favorite pastimes are sailing and cross-country skiing. Being active makes me feel good, so there are quite a few work-out sessions at Friskis & Svettis during the grey period between the sailing and skiing seasons.
