🇪🇺 Reflecting on Quantum Europe 2024 🇪🇺 I had the privilege of attending Quantum Europe in Brussels two weeks ago, and it was an inspiring experience to engage with industry leaders and experts about the future of #quantum #computing. I shared some key insights during the panel discussion: 1—Only the most complex problems are suited for quantum solutions, and industries like #chemistry and #materials science stand to gain the most. Collaboration with these sectors is essential to exploring potential use cases and preparing them for transformation. 2—Quantum computing will coexist with AI and high-performance computing (HPC). This integrated hybrid system will maximize our collective potential and enhance our ability to tackle complex challenges. 3—Cross-sector collaborations are crucial for driving innovation and accelerating advancements in quantum technologies. By working together, we can unlock new opportunities and solutions. 4—The #European #quantum #computing ecosystem is very strong and could play a leading role in helping Europe recover tech sovereignty. This involves thoughtful investment and technical strategies to navigate the evolving landscape. Thank you to Forum Europe for organizing such an insightful conference. This facility houses the most performant enterprise-grade quantum computer available and is now fully operational III. The facility will immediately benefit local industries such as pharma, finance, and manufacturing in Switzerland. Transformative Technology Quantum computing, one of the most transformative technologies of our time, shows immense promise in addressing significant challenges in healthcare, climate, energy, and more. Initial use cases are already underway, with numerous further applications on the horizon VII. Academia Swiss academic institutions have long focused on quantum science through various National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs), making Switzerland a hotbed for quantum science and providing access to highly trained professionals. QuantumBasel is collaborating with academia, including the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW and the University of Basel VIII. The STS Forum today turned its attention to #quantum, and I was lucky enough to attend! 🎉 Each year in Kyoto, the Science and Technology in Society Forum holds a global symposium – a ‘Davos for science’ dedicated to the impact of science on the future of humankind and the planet. The American Associates of STS held its 2024 workshop today, hosted at the IBM Innovation Studio in New York, on the topic of quantum computing. ⚛ The half-day workshop featured esteemed guests from academia, private sector, research, and government. Here are some key takeaways from the panel and group discussions: 🔬 Transformational quantum applications are only predicted for 5-10 years in the future, or longer. Many of the first applications will aid scientists who study nanoscale molecules or systems with quantum effects, such as in biopharma, novel materials, or physics. ⚠ Social risks include a ‘winner-take-all’ actor who alone cracks the code for quantum supercomputing; the potential for rogue actors to use quantum’s power for nefarious ends; and the widening of a global digital divide. 🤝 International cooperation and science-driven inquiry are key pillars in the development of quantum computing, and will remain so as the the technology matures. Here’s hoping these topics can be developed further at this Fall’s STS Forum in Japan! Two weeks ago, Israel unveiled its first domestically developed #quantum computer—a 20-qubit system utilizing advanced superconducting technology. This achievement is the result of collaboration between the Israel Innovation Authority , IAI - Israel Aerospace Industries, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Yissum, The Hebrew University Tech Transfer Company. At the same time, #Chicago is emerging as the "Quantum Silicon Valley," with significant investments and a growing, world-class quantum ecosystem. The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, set to open in two years, will capitalize on this growth. It has already attracted big names like IBM and PsiQuantum to develop and deploy new state-of-the-art quantum computers right here in Chicago. I have been meeting with major academic, research, and industrial stakeholders within this ecosystem to explore the best ways to connect Israel and the Chicago area in the quantum field. The U.N. has declared 2025 to be the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Quantum technology has the potential to shape the future of our world, enabling breakthroughs in research that can positively impact every aspect of our lives.
