Thinking about going off the grid? We recently sat down with our Technical Support Engineer, Kenny, to ask him for a few tips. He's been living successfully off-grid for 20+ years. Get the details from our new blog.

“The grid” isn’t a single entity: Any given spot in the US is served by one of three regional grid systems—one of which serves only the state of Texas—though they do connect to each other on some level to distribute power to millions of customers.

Most of the electric grid isn't monitored... let that sink in for a second. Arguably the most critical infrastructure in the U.S. is not monitored in real-time. There is no independent detailed and comprehensive real-time monitoring system to ensure the safety, resilience and security of the electric grid. Our aging grid is the crux of the drive towards sustainability and succumbing to the challenges of increased demand, climate change and security threats. You can't manage (nor improve) what isn't being measured. We need comprehensive and detailed independent monitoring of our Nation's electric grid now. Solutions exist. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state utility commissions can act. #electricgrid #sustainability #infrastructure #gridmodernization #gridresilience
Which cities in the U.S. struggle the most with ensuring safe, reliable power? Data from Whisker Labs' Ting sensor network is bringing clarity to this question in a way not possible before. “The CenterPoint grid is amongst the most challenged that we see,” Marshall said, compared to other utilities in not just Texas but across the country. “Houston has the most power outages that we measure in the country, by far.” A more resilient grid requires measurement and monitoring to understand where resources are needed most. Thank you Claire Hao for helping to bring attention to the increasing challenges Texans face with the state of its power grid, and more broadly, the difficult problems facing the US grid at large. https://lnkd.in/ehQWFaVp #gridresilience #utilities #powergrid #predictandprevent #insurtech

https://lnkd.in/g22MWnkx An exceptional primer on Codes and Standards for BESS by Richard Austin of Affiliated Engineers, Inc.. It covers configs, COMMON technology misconceptions, and makes suggestions for successful deployments. This should be Day-One reading for folks getting into the battery space. If there are learnings in here, battery professionals should keep this article handy until committed to memory.

Grid, schmid, indeed! Much rightful rage directed at Centerpoint here in Houston over the past week, and I wonder if its CEO may last the week? But after the big Texas grid freeze failure of 2021, I decided to put in my own solar+battery system so that it never happened again. It sailed through the blackout with ease - wouldn't have even known we lost power except for the notification sent to my phone by my SPAN smart panel. My desktop computer didn't see the slightest hiccup. Now our own outage only lasted ~12 hours, so wasn't able to give every aspect the full stress test, but approach sunset on the first day w 94% in my battery when the power came back on, and am confident based on prior experience in managing these 2x Tesla Energy batteries, that we would have been fine. Wouldn't have cranked the 2 A/C's as hard as usual during the night, but am confident would have made it to sunrise (and next recharge cycle) just fine. In an island of darkness, our home also became refuge for family, and for that I am doubly grateful. The future of energy is not only electric, but more decentralized. The rapidly declining cost of batteries, and a bit more improvement in software, will make such options accessible for many more people. And then, they too, will never have to go through the pain of an extended outage again! https://lnkd.in/d2ssrphd

There's many conversations going on regarding GETs (Grid Enhancing Technologies) on our Transmission grid. The two words I like to use most when discussing this is SCALABILITY & CONTINUITY. Why these two words? It's because I believe it's important to measure every span (the entire grid) to obtain an accurate Dynamic Line Rating. Please take a look at this article "Federal-State Modern Grid Deployment Initiative" by The White House, and please contact me if you'd like to discuss GETs solutions! "To that end, modern grid technologies, including high performance conductors and grid enhancing technologies (“GETs”, such as dynamic line ratings), are proven, commerciallyavailable solutions that can be rapidly and affordably deployed at-scale today to improve line capacity, performance, and resilience. They can be beneficial for both new and existing transmission and distribution projects. https://lnkd.in/ejbcmUwB
