WineGB's most recent report showed that 19% of sales for English wine producers come from cellar door sales. I know this figure is likely much higher for smaller producers. Currently, visiting a vineyard in the UK, especially in more rural areas, is typically a one-day activity. Instead of a shop that strips the personality out of the wines, could there be a hub created with a working vineyard that is easily accessible to consumers and showcases wines from the entire region? This is just an idea—perhaps not entirely feasible—but such innovative concepts are exactly what the industry needs at the moment. #wine
Luke Flunder Insightful. Couldn't agree more. Does make you wonder as to why there arent more CD/D2C driven sites as you mention created as unifying destinations. It isn't specific to wine. I am at a loss to understand how, when it comes to British fine produce, you still see so many farms (say, cheese, charcuterie for instance), where the Door is more of a complication to visit than its worth.
Very interesting Luke. I think an English Wine Shop in Woodbridge or Framlingham listing all skus on the current market would be a huge draw
Great perspective, it’s been a dream to do this for the south west region.
The regional wine centre / shop model is quite common across European wine regions . Generally a supporting marketing piece which can become slightly difficult to cost justify over time
Great initiative Luke, perhaps one of the super organised regional organisations such as Vineyards of Hampshire, Wine Garden of England or Sussex Modern could run a pilot scheme 🍇🥂✨🍾🍷🛍️
