Look for candidates who can effectively communicate complex financial information to stakeholders at all levels, from the boardroom to the front lines. 4- Prioritize curiosity over credentials. A curious mind is always hungry for new insights and can adapt to changing business needs. Look for candidates who are passionate about learning and are always seeking to improve their skills. An FP&A Manager, or Financial Planning & Analysis Manager, plays a pivotal role in a company, bridging the gap between financial forecasting and strategic business decisions. To excel, they must possess a robust set of soft skills that facilitate effective communication, leadership, and collaboration. **Communication** is key. Internally, an FP&A Manager must articulate financial concepts in layman's terms to team members, ensuring clarity and understanding. Externally, they should communicate with stakeholders confidently, providing insights that drive business growth. **Leadership** involves guiding the finance team with a clear vision, setting achievable goals, and motivating team members to perform at their best. It also means being approachable and open to feedback, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. **Collaboration** is essential for working with various departments to gather data and insights. One thing I've learned from speaking with finance leaders is that you can have exceptional technical ability for FP&A, but if you can't develop, long-lasting and strategic relationships, you will fall behind. Having an exceptional business partner means: 1. Cross-function collaboration - Inter-departmental meetings with a purpose 2. Joint planning sessions - Supporting department heads with accurate forecasts 3. Integrated business planning - Aligned business strategy If you need a strategic advisor to take your finance function to the next level, hire a finance business partner.
