The The D-Day Story and national museum partners present an online exhibition in the lead up to the 80th anniversary of D-Day in World War Two. Every day, for 80 days, the D-Day Museum will share a selection of 80 objects relating to the Normandy campaign, from their collection and those of other major museums including the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN). Click here to follow the story - https://bit.ly/3PryxXL Object 15: This was one of the largest types of shell fired by Allied warships. Each shell is the size of a person, and could be fired to a distance of 19 miles (30.5km). Warships’ guns were primarily intended for firing at other warships, and ships with the largest and most powerful guns ruled the waves (though as had been demonstrated earlier in the Second World War, carrier-based aircraft had become an even more powerful weapon). There were no German battleships facing the Allied fleet at Normandy, so warships used their guns for another purpose: bombarding the German defences on land. Only the largest Allied warships fired shells as large as this type, since the guns required were so big and expensive to make. British battleships such as HMS Warspite and HMS Ramillies each had eight 15 inch guns, situated in pairs within four turrets, while the monitor HMS Roberts had a pair of these guns. US Navy battleships taking part in the Normandy campaign also had large, but slightly smaller guns: 12 or 14 inch calibre. Large naval guns like these had a number of advantages. The larger a shell, the greater the area over which it was likely to cause damage, and the more chance it had of destroying a well-protected target such as a concrete bunker or a tank. A 15 inch shell weighed 880kg (1938lbs) and its name refers to its diameter of 15 inches (38cm). 15 inch guns could fire over a substantial distance: up to 19 miles (30.5km). This often meant that on D-Day, warships firing such shells could bombard the German coastal gun batteries from so far away that return fire from the German guns could not reach as far as the ship. This huge range also meant that warships armed with such guns could very effectively continue to support the troops ashore for weeks, until the fighting had moved beyond that range. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the end of Operation Market Garden, a pivotal yet flawed initiative in World War II. While it aimed to secure a swift victory in the Netherlands, miscalculations in planning led to significant losses and highlighted the complexities of warfare. The courage and sacrifice of the Allied combatants during this operation remind us of the human cost of military endeavors. As we reflect on this historical event, we must consider the lessons learned: the importance of thorough planning, the need for clear communication, and the value of adaptability in the face of uncertainty. These insights remain relevant in today’s fast-paced and unpredictable world, guiding us to make more informed decisions in our personal and professional lives. Let us honor the legacy of those who fought and strive to apply these lessons in our pursuit of progress.

"It's hard to throw a punch when you're too busy wringing your hands." Facing novel operational challenges is not unique to our time. Such is the challenge all enterprises face in a dynamic and constantly changing competitive environment. We would be wise to take lessons from the past where we can, and the mantra above, expressed by the Strategic Studies Group of the late Cold War, is one such lesson that's just as valid today as it was in 1982. #strategy #strategiccompetition #defense #nationalsecurity #navy
