Flood in Poland – Let’s Help Together! The current flood situation in Poland is extremely challenging. Many people have lost their homes, belongings, and access to basic necessities. In the face of this tragedy, it is crucial that we show our support and solidarity with those affected. We encourage everyone to join efforts to help those who need it the most. Devastating Floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: A Call for Solidarity and Support It's with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news about the catastrophic floods currently ravaging Rio Grande do Sul, the state where I was born and where ISCA's Latam Headquarters is located. This disaster has taken the lives of almost 150 people and forced nearly 620,000 from their homes, marking the highest displacement number for a single tragedy on record for Brazil. Last week's hopes for relief with lowering river levels were dashed by new rains over the weekend, exacerbating the devastation and bringing further losses to the region. Entire cities are submerged, lives have been lost, and our agriculture, the lifeblood of our economy, is in ruins. In these trying times, our thoughts and prayers are with all affected. As we witness the resilience and courage of our community, let's come together to support those in need. Every bit of help counts, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Looking out at all the Rain? You’d think our rivers and the species that call them home, would welcome the downpour. If the River Derwent was a healthy, nature-rich river catchment it would, but in its current state, the heavy rain we are having right now, will be flashing down bare uplands, bringing soil and polluted run-off straight into the waters. Species will suffer, and so will we, with the potential for floods and sewage ‘overflow’. 🌧️ Experiencing the Aftermath of the Floods in Picanya, Valencia 🌧️ Picanya, one of the worst-hit areas, is usually just a 30-minute drive south of us in Valencia City. Yesterday, though, it took two hours by car as far as we could go, and then over an hour on foot. The closer we got, the more devastating the impact: thick mud underfoot, closed roads, and an unsettling heaviness in the air. We passed only four soldiers, tirelessly clearing warehouses where businesses had lost most of their stock. Leaving Picanya, muddy and exhausted, we saw a steady stream of volunteers arriving, many young people from across Spain, carrying shovels, rubber boots, and wearing long sleeves – hardly the typical sight in this part of Spain. Their determination to help was humbling and moving. Many of you have asked how to support. One area close to our hearts is the plight of animal rescue centers, many of which have been severely impacted. Modepran, in particular, has lost both their facilities and countless animals in the flood. They’re now desperately working to provide shelter, food, and care for injured animals and reunite pets with owners – some of whom remain unreachable. If you’re able to support, please consider donating to Modepran. They have a long road ahead in rebuilding their center and caring for the animals left in the flood’s wake. Every little bit will help them provide care and hope amidst this devastation. Hi, friends and LinkedIn community, Good Morning.    I hope everyone is well. I wish I had better news to share. The rain in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has returned, and my friends are facing numerous difficulties in trying to help victims of the floods.   As you may know, since last Thursday, my state in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, has been suffering from heavy rain, causing tragic floods everywhere. Due to the immense amount of rain (from 185 mm a day to 800 mm a day), most of my state and all cities around my hometown suffer from floods and landslides. Up to now, around 350 cities have been affected; some have completely disappeared and are submerged underwater. In some areas, the water has gone down, and we are starting to see the face of destruction.   Thankfully, and luckily, my immediate family is well. However, extended family members and friends’ families and other 150 million people are displaced and homeless.   I am humbly running a GoFundMe myself to help the people I know who are front-line to this tragedy and do everything they can – hands-on – to help those around them. This fundraising is not for huge organizations or someone we don’t know. It is me. Since Friday, I have been in touch with my family and these friends, following their work and helping them with direct funds. I’ve donated all I could this month, so at this point, I am turning to my Canadian community. Every $10 we raise translates into R$30 real, so our small contributions go further. I am urging for help because the rain continues. At Pelorus Foundation we understand the crucial roles communication and mental health can play in the work of people protecting nature. On the frontline of conservation, field rangers face an abundance of dangerous situations, yet often are under-equipped and have inadequate training and support. Ranger work is often emotionally taxing. These men and women work in remote field locations for long stretches of time, separated from home and family for weeks or even months. Protecting some of the world’s most endangered and highly trafficked animals is dangerous work too, often coming face to face with armed poachers. According to the International Ranger Federation, 149 rangers died on duty over the last year - nearly a 50% increase over the previous year. Rangers are a critical part of a larger conservation story. We can’t stop poaching, save the world’s most endangered species, or protect its most vital places without the crucial work done by rangers. On Cortes Island, we are working hard to protect Manson Bay Forest, a beautiful forested area with mature Douglas-fir, Western Hemlock, and Western Redcedar forest and scattered veteran trees that are at least 200 years old. What are veteran trees and why are they important? 🌲 They are trees that have developed some features of ancient trees, but are typically only in their second or mature stage of life. 🌲 They provide holes, cavities, and crevices that are important for wildlife habitat. 🌲 A veteran tree can be any age. All ancient trees are veteran trees, but not all veteran trees are ancient.
