Deepinder Goyal has asked a candidate to pay Rs 20 lakhs and work unpaid for one year as a criterion to be hired as his Chief of Staff. This is problematic on many levels. First, let’s address the basics. Is the opportunity to work with Deepinder Goyal worth Rs 20 lakhs? The simple answer is YES. But the same can be said about his VPs, Directors, and all the other people he directly works with. Does that mean he should ask all his direct reports to pay him money as well? There is undeniably significant learning involved in many prestigious opportunities, such as: - Working as the CEO of Google - Working as a VP at Zomato - Working as an engineer at Apple - Working as an intern at Meta The same can be said about 80-90% of companies. If you have two years of experience working for Amazon, you can command a good salary at your next job. Does that mean Amazon should ask you to work for free—or worse, pay them for the opportunity to work there? There are two possible explanations for Deepinder Goyal’s actions: - It’s a stunt designed to garner social media attention. - He’s like many other multi-billion-dollar founders, full of himself, and believes it’s justified to ask for Rs 20 lakhs in exchange for the privilege of spending time with him.

Both scenarios set a troubling precedent. I can almost guarantee we’ll see something similar from Bhavish Aggarwal in a few months. The Labour Ministry should intervene to put an end to this mockery of Indian labor laws before it becomes a trend among "God Complex" billionaires.

Active Sourcing for Interns? When I started my recruitment career I was hiring for a POS system. Yupp, that’s a cashier-app for micro-businesses such as pop-up stores, kebab places, etc. While our product was boring as watching paint dry 👀 , our ambitions and hiring requirements were insanely high. We expected talents to leave successful startups such as Uber or Deliveroo and join us for less salary and benefits. Sounds like a challenge, right? You’re damn right! Since that time, I started to source for every single role. Yes, even interns 😅 If you really want to hire the best of the best, you have to: 👩🏻💻 leverage sourcing & job-ads based on best-practices 💫 build a story and vision that catches A-Players 👀 make sure to assess while building a smooth experience And if you hire A-Players, it doesn’t matter if they are Interns or C-Level. This principles apply to any role.

Ah, the epitome of innovation in hiring! Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has truly revolutionized the job market by flipping it on its head. Who needs mundane perks like "salary" or "benefits" when you can pay a company ₹20 lakh for the divine privilege of working for them for free like an elite unpaid intern? Genius, isn’t it? This isn't just a job opportunity; it's a golden ticket to become an "investment" for Zomato. A 21st-century Robin Hood, Goyal seems to have figured out how to take from the rich (aspiring candidates) and… keep it. Oh, and let’s not forget the bonus of being "closely mentored" by the CEO. Translation? You get a ringside seat to someone else’s stress-filled, high-stakes decision-making while pondering your dwindling bank balance. Inspirational! And the cherry on top? Zomato probably expects the chosen one to show undying gratitude for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay to work. Because nothing screams "employee loyalty" like hemorrhaging personal savings to a billion-dollar company. So, hats off to this groundbreaking recruitment strategy! Perhaps other companies can take a page out of this playbook: "Amazon Prime Job Memberships," or "Google ’s Intern Starter Kit—Pay As You Learn." Truly, a masterpiece of corporate imagination! #CorporateComedy #HireMeOrRobMe #RevolutionaryExploitation #PayToWork #JobMarketGenius #ModernSlavery #UnpaidCEOInternship #StartupSatire #EmploymentInnovation #DreamJobOrNightmare

You probably know only 20% of managing a business on online marketplace..... if you opted for the same mode of learning as the majority do, i.e. buy a course, either online or physical and then get an internship. I did the same... {only difference is that I did not pay a penny to get either, lol} But as I entered the market, I realized that operating business on an online marketplace isn’t just about being able to use certain tools which gives you access to a database. It is a business, and like any other you should have all the armory in your arsenal to run this effectively, even more. You need to be creative, have a mind that can solve problems, and a character which can take decisions and own their consequences. Otherwise, you will have the same fate as those 62/73 Amazon experts which were hired by a renowned US based Amazon seller Agency but were fired in the very next month. Having knowledge about marketplace’s interface and the ability to read a database is not enough to survive, let alone thrive

4 years ago, I started my career in the Amazon sphere. Did I know something about Amazon? No. But it's been quite a long journey. 4.5 years ago, I quit my job as a Zara shop assistant. I had no savings and no offers. Those were the first two lessons I learned from that period of time: 1. Save money 2. Quit a job only with a new offer. I didn't know what to do with my life. I sat and thought about what I was interested in, and I understood - marketing. I had no education and no money for studying, but I started applying for many vacancies, mostly without results. Another challenge was that I didn't have much money. I lived with my mom, so I had the flat and basic necessities, and she gave me a very small amount of money. I could afford only transportation and coffee once a week. Since that time, coffee has become a sign that I have money. If I'm not able to buy a cup of coffee a day in Europe, I start thinking that tomorrow I'll run out of money. One day, I got a job interview. I wanted to be a copywriter, but that company told me that doing SEO for Amazon was what I was looking for. They paid money every week, so I decided to earn a little bit of money. The thing is, I'm still doing it:)) How many times I thought that I need to change something - more than the number of my working days. But this experience has given me the possibility to relocate, travel, live as I want, work in different languages, and meet people who have become my friends. I feel important, necessary, and experienced as every day I receive new job propositions. I hope this sphere will provide me with more opportunities and chances to showcase my abilities, ambitions, and knowledge. Really want to read about your journeys in the comments - see you there.

How did I land up at Amazon even when I had a degree in English Language and Literature ? This has to be one of the most asked questions on my professional front. And to be very honest, I guess Amazon is not a brand that just looks at your degrees but through the process of interviewing, the Recruiters look for abled people who know how to act as per the need on the practical front. While I was working at PINKVILLA as a Content Producer, while a random Google search, I noticed of this opening and I just sent in my resume and applied. I had prior experience of four years but that was not the best-suited, however my Hiring Manager thought that my experience has shaped me into the person I am and enabled me to take great professional decisions that quick. Going back to the story, I completely forgot after applying because obviously I thought how can I land up having a degree in Literature but little did I know. Exactly a month later, I get this mail talking about an interview scheduled with the Manager and to be honest, I was shocked. Then when I joined the dots, I realised that another friend of mine who completed her B.Com is working as a Supply Chain Executive at Deloitte another one who was great at Maths is now writing for Zomato and so it doesn’t really make a difference. But what actually does is, learning to do your actions right, apply for a specific thing and if that is the right thing for you, it will automatically fall in your lap. #luckfavoursthebrave #zomato #amazonwebservices #hiring #marketingexecutive #deloitte #worryless

I was laid off 2 times in 3 months. The second time, it was because I was too productive. Or maybe because I wasn’t part of their plan. Many years ago, Amazon laid off thousands and I was one of them. It was a warehouse job, I had to accept it. Having 2 degrees, I couldn’t find a marketing job, why? Because at the time, I thought having a Digital Marketing degree and some experience was enough. Digital Marketing is broad, and you must choose your expertise; otherwise, no one will consider you. I worked my A** off in that warehouse. They used to count productivity and give a score. I was always on top. After three months of probation, I thought I would be permanent and work my way up within the company. I was laid off with 2 days of notice. I was devastated. I knew I gave my all, but people would judge me because I couldn’t even handle a warehouse job. But you know what, everything happens for a reason. It was Ramadan, and I thought I would take a break from job search for a month, and this helped me to: - Refresh my mind. - Learn about SEO. - Work with a small business on their website - Land a full-time job as an SEO specialist Always trust in yourself, and if something is not working, find a way to make it work; there is always a solution. Since then, I’ve built up 3 years of SEO experience, successfully ranking multiple websites on the first page of Google. This expertise has saved businesses over £5 million in ad costs through organic search. #seo #searchengineoptimisation #linkedinbranding #personalbrand
