As I manage a website for a charity I was interested in my mentors' experiences online generally and in understanding common barriers and problems they face with different websites. They were also able to provide feedback on the user journey specific to the website I manage and to give input into proposed new homepage designs. I ended up having two mentors, as the first wasn't able to continue for personal reasons, and this gave me the opportunity to hear from mentors with different disabilities and lived experiences. My second mentor also gave a talk to all staff at the charity I work for, which lots of people found interesting and useful. Sometimes the smallest thing can bring up your biggest hurt. I recently had the absolute pleasure of delivering a virtual speech for the wonderful charity, Eye Matter about how the way we see ourselves can shape our world and everything in it. The stories we tell ourselves become like lenses through which we view life. But in our noisy, busy modern-day world, sometimes what we really need to do is to close our eyes, embrace the silence and get to know the person we really are, when nobody is watching. As individuals, we want more than anything to see others and to feel seen and yet so often, we can become blind to the simple truths which are staring us right in the face. I love how sharing my stories of disability, self-acceptance, love, employment, unexpected success and deep insecurity help others to see themselves and those around them in a totally new light.
