♥ Despite so many of us being directly impacted by the self-harm and death by suicide of important people in our lives, this understandably sensitive topic remains so hard to openly discuss. A common misconception that thrives because of this stigma is that it's not possible to PREVENT suicide. However, it's very important to know, and share widely, that #suicideprevention can work and that for each each at-risk individual, their unique circumstances truly matter when it comes to navigating possible interventions. Please joins us in taking a few minutes to read a recent Help Texts blog post about how grief support can be a powerful tool in suicide prevention for those who are themselves survivors of loss, and actively grieving. Thank you to Help Texts founder, Emma Payne, and her colleagues, Chief Clinical Officer, Melissa Lunardini, PhD, MA, MBA, FT, and Client and Subscriber Support Lead, Rah Adams, CT for creating this insightful content. ♥ #suicideprevention #suicideawarenessmonth #grief #griefsupport #postvention #helptexts
I believe in people and our capacity to help each other when things go pear-shaped. Proud to be breaking through the barriers to mental health and grief support, as the CEO of Help Texts.
Many (ok most!) members of the Help Texts team have had their lives directly and forever impacted by the suicide of a loved one. It's what brought me to this work, and I'm so proud - every day - to know that we deliver simple, expert, effective support to people grieving these incredibly painful losses. It's more than just providing support, though. Grief support saves lives. Thank you to my Chief Clinical Officer, Melissa Lunardini, PhD, MA, MBA, FT, and my Client and Subscriber Support Lead, Rah Adams, CT, for this important blog post, written to mark #suicideawarenessmonth. Melissa and Rah care for our subscribers every day, and see firsthand that the pain of grief can sometimes feel so overwhelming that grievers find themselves in crisis. Our subscriber support team is made of mental health professionals, with additional training in suicide prevention. We're here for grievers, if and when those moments arise. Take a few minutes to read Rah and Melissa's blog post about how grief support can be a powerful tool in suicide prevention. https://loom.ly/RjfcF3Q #helptexts #suicideprevention #suicideawarenessmonth #grief #griefsupport #postvention

"Suicide Is Preventable" As a mother who lost her child to suicide, that phrase makes me cringe every time I see or hear it. This isn't a popular argument but, let me tell you why. Through my own grief journey and supporting other loss survivors down their own path, one of the biggest mountains to overcome is the overwhelming guilt. As a parent, we spend countless hours asking, "What didn't I see/do?" Or, "I am their parent, and I was supposed to protect them so, this is my fault." As an advocate, I also spend countless hours telling parents that, you can't control what your child didn't tell you. Or, hearing of how the parents spent a lot of time finding mental health treatment for their child but, there was still a negative outcome. We try to appease the parents with reality. We really didn't have that much control. Then, the emphatic statement came out that suicide is preventable. First, if it was preventable, our number of suicide deaths wouldn't increase every year. Secondly, you have just unraveled the work done to help loss survivors through their grief. Let's be realistic to give people hope and change the statement to be either, "Suicide Can Be Preventable" or, "Suicide Is Preventable Given The Right Circumstances" #postvention #suicideloss #suicidelosssurvivors

You cannot understand the depths of despair from suicide loss unless you've walked through it (and I sincerely hope you haven't). I lost my brother to suicide three years ago yesterday (on the anniversary of my father's death). The complications of this grief, the unrelenting despair, and the unresolved guilt that remains from the trauma left behind cannot be understated. Take the time to understand and recognize the signs of suicide in your people, whether they be employees, friends, neighbors, or family. Provide support whenever you can. This is a very difficult time of year. Company parties, family gatherings, and amplified post-election rhetoric can put extreme pressure on people. If you or someone you know feels hopeless or alone (and chances are high that you know someone who feels this way), please know there are resources to help navigate the complexities of suicide ideations. Be aware, be active, and check on your people check on your people check on your people. https://lnkd.in/gxPm-skk

Today, November 23rd, is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day - a day dedicated to supporting and connecting those of us who have lost someone we love to suicide. For me, this day carries deep, personal significance. This coming February (in 73 days), it will mark five years since my brother Kieran took his own life. Losing him was, and continues to be, the hardest journey of my life. Grief after suicide is not linear; it’s a wave that ebbs and flows, but never truly subsides. Did you know that in the UK alone, over 6,000 lives are lost to suicide every year? Globally, that number rises to more than 720,000 - a devastating reminder of how urgent this issue is. Each loss impacts an average of 135 people, meaning that millions of us carry the heavy burden of losing someone in this way. I think about my brother every single day. His light, his laughter, and the love he brought to the world should still be here. While I can't bring him back, I can keep his memory alive by advocating for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. This commitment is central to who I am and fuels my efforts to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Today, as we remember all those we’ve lost, let’s also recommit to supporting those still with us - through listening, showing up, and reminding each other that we are never alone. If you’re struggling or have experienced a loss yourself, please know that you are seen, and you are loved. Let’s work together to make a world where fewer lives are lost, and more lights keep shining brightly. #InternationalSurvivorsOfSuicideLossDay #MentalHealthAwareness #SuicidePrevention

Today marks Suicide Prevention Day, where the theme this year is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". We all play a role in suicide prevention: If you're concerned about someone and not sure on how to have the conversation, Mind has a useful guide on how to have the conversation: https://lnkd.in/ek6Viy6a Now more than ever, workplaces need to consider the role they play in suicide prevention. Today is National Suicide Survivor Day. It’s a day to honor those who have lost a loved one to suicide and to acknowledge the unique pain and strength of survivors. If you’ve experienced this kind of loss, please know that you’re not alone. Healing is a journey, and it’s okay to grieve in your own way and at your own pace. I’ve been privileged to not lose anyone to suicide but I want to take a moment to personally acknowledge how difficult it can be to carry this loss. I’ve seen the hurt when my close friends lost someone this way. I’ve seen the strength in the survivors when they tell their stories. Whether it’s been days or decades, your pain is valid, and your loved one’s memory matters. Resources for support: • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) offers survivor support and guidance. • Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, for immediate help. • The Alliance of Hope provides a compassionate online community for survivors of suicide loss. Let’s reduce stigma by speaking openly about mental health, honoring those we’ve lost, and showing compassion to ourselves and others. To everyone reading this: You are seen, you are loved, and your story matters. I am a text or message away if you need someone 💞
