The financial system is robust enough to weather potential shocks, including those stemming from commercial real estate loans, says Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. In a recent article on GlobeSt.com, Cook said CRE risks are “sizable but manageable,” outlining the committee’s focus on monitoring vulnerabilities in households and businesses as well as financial institutions’ use of leverage, funding risk and asset valuations. While lending from regional banks is improving and financial firms are proving prepared, the reality remains for high concentrations of CRE loans – comprising roughly 5% of large banks’ assets and 30% of smaller banks. Property values are shifting with lifestyle trends, continuing to affect office and multifamily projects, warranting strategic moves as loans mature. Read the full piece below:
