🌍 Insightful EU Climate Risk Assessment Available The European Environment Agency (EEA) has recently released the European Climate Risk Assessment that provides an in-depth look at the current and future climate challenges facing Europe. 💡 Key Insights: → Europe’s Climate Urgency: As the fastest-warming continent, Europe faces significant environmental and policy challenges. → Widespread Impact: The assessment identifies 36 climate risks with potentially severe repercussions for Europe’s ecosystems, society, and economic stability. → Beyond Climate Drivers: Addressing these risks requires a focus on both climatic and non-climatic factors. → Progress and Preparation: EU Member States are advancing in understanding and preparing for these risks, which is increasingly reflected in national adaptation policies. → Urgency in Adaptation: Immediate action is needed to prevent rigid choices that are not fit for the future in a changing climate, especially in areas like land-use and infrastructure planning. 💥 An article published yesterday by the EU Commission reveals the current difficulties in adopting, implementing and monitoring EU directives. It comments on the current climate report and its risk assessment by the #EuropeanEnvironmentAgency - a kind of call to action. Here is the short version: ➡️ risks will be better understood to promote greater cooperation between countries ➡️ the Commission will improve and expand access to data and scenarios to provide better warnings ➡️ the EU is in favor of better spatial planning in EU countries, the inclusion of climate risks in the planning and maintenance of critical infrastructure ➡️ willingness of the Commission to support member states in budgeting for climate risks It all reads well, but unfortunately it has no influence on doing. They are all just recommendations or offers. In my opinion, there is far too much subjunctive in it! 👉 And you have to ask yourself how seriously this report is being taken in view of the explosive nature of the research findings, the current status of achieving the Green Deal and the timeline. In my view, it is now particularly important that governments prioritize comprehensive climate resilience measures to mitigate these escalating risks. #sustainability #netzero #resilience #climatechange

In response to the first European Climate Risk Assessment report published by the European Environment Agency, the European Commission has published a communication that sets out key recommendations and initiatives to effectively get ahead of climate impacts in the coming years. Here are some of the recommendations and assessments for the different impacted clusters mentioned in the EEA report: 🌍 Natural #ecosystems: the Commission, working with the Member States, will draw up guidance on the development of resilient landscapes that can buffer the impacts of climate change. 💧 Water: protecting and restoring the water cycle is crucial to ensure a water-resilient Europe. 🏥 Health: strengthen surveillance and response mechanisms for climate-related health threats. 🍎 Food: the Commission will conduct a study on adaptation in #agriculture, to be finalised by the end of 2025. 🏘 Infrastructure and built environment: the Commission will ask the European Standardisation Organisations (ESOs) to integrate #climateadaptation and resilience considerations into European standards for the design of infrastructure with a life-cycle of more than 30 years. 💶 Economy: the provisional agreement on a new economic governance framework is expected to strengthen fiscal sustainability and promote growth. Read the European Commission's communication, which includes an in depth analysis of the risks and policy developments for all the different clusters. https://lnkd.in/gHw-jvHd

Legitimacy, Institutional Inertia, and Climate Change Ali Hussein Samadi & Sajjad Afroozeh | SpringerLink https://lnkd.in/eBbEHkiG Abstract The increasing impact of climate change on the environment has led to more efforts, programs and global actions to control these changes. In the meantime, some obstacles hinder the effectiveness of environmental measures and policies. Part of these obstacles is related to institutional inertia. In this chapter, the effects of legitimacy, as one of the mechanisms that create institutional inertia, on environmental performance have been investigated. The legitimacy of the state is an issue that has received less attention in climate change discussions. In this chapter, using a regression model, the effect of government legitimacy on environmental performance has been investigated based on the data of 171 countries. The results show that there is a direct relationship between state legitimacy and environmental performance. The results also showed..... https://lnkd.in/ePruBqMx
