The bike chain has been lying (down 😋) comfortably in its functional service's arms for more than a century. Along with the accommodating interest of the industry, non-structural improvements have enlengthened its lifespan. Today, it is the ubiquitous option for a vast majority of bikes. Innovating the chain incrementally by improving sine fine the chain itself and its links has proved to be a reasonable way to reach our days, but not enough for some. It means that there is room for real improvements. I do not mean in the chain itself, but in its forever partner the sprocket. The brilliant guys at New Motion Labs grabbed the bull by the horns and have come up with a disruptive innovation in the sprocket. Its new shape doubles the area of contact with the chain. Thus, the engagement has been increased and friction reduced between both elements. As usual, ideas matter more than their execution. So simple. So certainly bright. Someone could say that someone else's ten years ago invented something like that. but this is not the point. The takeaway is that improvements, changes, and, why not, disruptions, are needed more than ever. The infamous comfort zone is becoming smaller and we cannot remain passive before the sign of time. That is evolution and adaptation, the keys to survival. Any change has to be considered, valued and then decided. We cannot accept everything as a contribution, nor reject everything because it is new, or different. The future is always better, but not indulgent.
