Why Classical? What Does It Really Mean? As with most terms used in horse culture, the term classical is very poorly defined, especially from a visual perspective. For us, Classical basically means good for the horse from a physical, mental and emotional perspective. While this is a pretty broad description, the truth of the matter is that every horse is different, and there is no one size fits all in terms of a "step by step" or "when a horse does "this", you do "that" type instruction manual. What we CAN do, as responsible owners and equine professionals, is learn to read our horses from these three perspectives. We CAN learn about equine behavior from the large volume of evidence and research that is out there. We CAN learn about their anatomy, muscle function and movement patterns. We CAN learn about the process of preparing them for ridden work, including hoof care, saddle fit, bridle fit, dental care etc. Ultimately, we can acquire enough knowledge to know when something is not right - evidenced by our horses' behavior and reactions. This may not be the message that a lot of people want to hear - it takes time, patience, comittment and, above all, a fundamental love of our horses that supercedes any other personal ambitions that we place on our horses. It takes courage to be a horse-first advocate in a culture that places value on what horses can do for us, rather than the ability to truly maintain their welfare - from their perspective. At the end of the day, we all have choices as to what kind of horse person we want to be, and at Equitopia, we encourage horsemanship that priortizes them, just for being them.
