Women are spearheading Social Impact, Tech and Business at the Women Leading Social Impact Summit. From fighting against online harassment to creating natural dyes with the help of bacteria, women founders have arrived from Calgary and Toronto to pitch their startups and test their chance to win the award to accelerate their businesses. Judges, apart from judging, of course, are here to provide feedback and encourage women to lead the change in their communities. I loved how the judges led the kind and open communication with the contesting women founders. Participants, like myself, came to draw inspiration and network with the entrepreneurial women in Alberta and beyond. In the photo with me is Kasey Machin, Founder and COO of Areto Labs. She is committed to making the online space more inclusive and positive for women. As a woman, I have personally experienced harassment on social media and have felt the need for an inclusive environment. Through my husband's experiences as an online gaming enthusiast, I am aware about the misogyny present in that space. Seeing someone like Kasey leading the charge for change is truly commending. I just knew that Toronto was the perfect location to kick off the pilot of the #selfmadeceobreakfast, and it made my heart smile how well it went. Check out this post to see all the wonderful speakers, partners and people who came together. With a mission to empower, inspire, and super-connect founders at no cost, our networking breakfast series aims to eliminate barriers to inspiration, networking, and social capital. I am thrilled with the successful kickoff event, which will set the stage for more impactful sessions to come. I've recently joined the Female Founders Rise personal branding challenge, and it's been an eye-opening experience. Being part of this 7,000-strong community of remarkable female entrepreneurs is truly inspiring. The variety of businesses and ideas is seriously impressive. It's also refreshing to meet others who, like myself, feel hesitant or get icky about posting on LinkedIn. But there are so many reasons why it's crucial that we overcome this - here are just a few: + Women could add £250 billion to the UK economy if given equal opportunities to start and grow businesses. + The new 'Invest in Women Taskforce' aims to funnel £250 million into women-led businesses to close the gender funding gap. + Women-led startups generate 10% more revenue over a 5-year period compared to male-led startups (BCG study, 2018). Yet, challenges persist: + Only 2.3% of VC funding went to women-led startups in 2020 (Crunchbase, 2021). + Just 12% of UK business angels are women (UK Business Angels Association, 2020). A massive thank you to Emmie Faust and her team for creating these unique networking opportunities, and inspiring us to encourage each other and pave the way for more women in business. 💃 Happy International Women's Day. Let's celebrate female entrepreneurs and advocates, who help to make the societal changes necessary to unleash the power of female entrepreneurship! 🚀 Let's inspire inclusion by celebrating the achievements and impact of women on today's International Women's Day (IWD). 💪 Let's close the GAP, as women remain largely underrepresented in entrepreneurship ecosystem with only 15.5% of startups having female co-/founders. --> Systemic change is therefore necessary to empower female entrepreneurs! 💰 In 2023, startups founded (or co-founded) by women in Europe raised €5.9B in venture capital. This represents 9.6% of all venture capital raised. The share has doubled in the last decade. But it's also stalled at around 10% since 2017 (data: Dealroom.co) 🇨🇭 In Switzland, 37 women-led businesses managed to raise a total of CHF 175 million in 2023, the highest amount ever raised by women-led startups since 2012. Despite the increase, the percentage of women receiving capital has remained below 10%. This week I was honored to join a panel for the Women Supporting Women event, organized by Startup Boston, Womenx Innovators and Center for Women & Enterprise. It was inspiring to be in a room filled with talented and driven women, all united by a shared goal of empowering and supporting each other. During the panel, we discussed the unique challenges women face in the startup world, and I was thrilled to share insights and strategies to help us all navigate the entrepreneurial landscape. It's incredible to see how our stories, experiences, and advice can uplift one another. What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than hearing from 3 inspirational female founders, surrounded by 99 other women, hosted in a female-founded workspace? It was great to hear insights from Valentina Milanova 🇺🇦, Sathya Smith and Alexa Grellet into the challenges and opportunities of being a female founder. Some things that provoked my thinking: 💛 Women can be perceived as maternal figures in the workplace which can come with an expectation of emotional investment, this can make it difficult - but crucial! - to set boundaries ⁉ When it comes to pitching at VC’s, women founders are likely to be asked about risk mitigation such as ‘what would you do if [insert very unlikely business critical incident] happened?' as opposed to aspirational questions such as ‘where do you see yourself in 5 years?’ 👆 The above point can make it more difficult to receive funding, so we need to see more women in VC’s, to invest in other women! 🧘♀️ Women can support and champion each other - it’s not about elbowing to get the one seat at the table. Let’s pull up some more chairs! Feeling super inspired to have met so many other women who are working in startups, have worked in startups, or are looking to work in startups.
