In 25 days I will be running my very first marathon. What a gift that it will be at the NYC Marathon. My running journey started in Jan. 2022. I was burnt out, overworked, and just not in a good place physically or mentally. Aside from working and running a small business, I was homeschooling my kids and carrying much of the burden at home as a military wife. I needed an outlet. I decided to pick up running because I was too self-conscious to pick up weights in a gym full of people. I also started running because I love being outdoors. I started with no real goal other than to keep moving and have a few precious moments to myself. There was no real plan to run any races, lose a certain amount of weight, or even be fast. But, as time went on, I felt like I needed a challenge and to work towards something specific so that I would remain consistent. I signed up for the Dec. 2022 OUC Half Marathon in Orlando. Most of training I did alone. I started off with the shoes I had and my Apple Watch. I didn’t even own headphones at the time, so I would borrow my husband’s. I downloaded a free training plan from the Nike Run app. I didn’t know much about pace and running zones, or to carry gels or some kind of fuel for longer runs. I started with what I had and my knowledge base grew over time. The day of my first race I was sick. I had flu-like symptoms. Any normal person would’ve been smart enough to sit it out. I decided to still run, feeling like I had put in too much work to not see things through. Having also struggled my entire life feeling like I never have something to show for my hard work, I felt like not running the race was not an option. So I ran. It was difficult and not pretty, but I ran the course and crossed the finish line. The recovery afterwards was brutal and I will never run another race sick again, but I learned something that day for the first time at 33 years old: I can do hard things. I am capable of more than I give myself credit for. Running has been an incredible gift. The sport and its community has enriched my life in ways I never imagined it would. I am healthier and stronger, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Not every run goes according to plan, but the work is never ever wasted. If you’ve read this far, thank you. I share all of this because one way I have chosen to pay it forward is by running with Team for Kids at the NYC Marathon. I committed to raise crucial funds that support vital running and community programs for youth in underserved communities. As a mother to 5 boys, I know all too well the massive financial commitment it takes to have kids in any kind of sport. While my family is fortunate enough to have the means that allow my kids to have access to these opportunities, not every family can say the same. I am just over 12 hours away from my fundraising deadline. I am not giving up yet. Please consider donating via the link below. Thank you in advance for your support.

This Sunday, I’ll be taking on my first-ever half marathon at Goodwood race track in the UK, alongside my wife Grace Denny, her brother, and his wife. We’re running to support Cure Parkinson's and their incredible work, inspired by my wife’s grandad, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a few years ago. His approach to tackling the disease has been remarkable—throwing himself into understanding it, exercising daily, and facing it head-on with admirable determination. Running has been a long journey for me. From reluctantly starting 15 years ago (and inflicting shin splints on myself with alarming regularity due to my appalling technique) to completing the BM10K in 2017 alongside other University of Sussex runners, it’s been up and down. Tearing my ACL and meniscus in a skiing accident in 2019 was a major setback, but getting back into running through rehab during the pandemic helped me recover, both physically and mentally. Those runs, by Dutch beaches, around central Amsterdam parks and along forest trails and river paths here in Heidelberg, have made exercise something I (almost always) look forward to. I know times are tough for many, with so many causes needing support right now. But if you can spare anything for our family fundraiser, however small, it would mean the world to us and to those living with Parkinson’s. Cure Parkinson’s is dedicated to finding treatments that change how this progressive disease impacts the lives of sufferers and those around them. Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally, with over 153,000 people in the UK affected, and that number is set to rise. Right now, there’s no cure to slow or stop the disease, but with the right funding, there is hope for a cure and effective treatments. Any support you can give would be massively appreciated—thank you! Find out more about Cure Parkinson’s here: 🔗 cureparkinsons.org.uk And if you’re able to donate to our GoFundMe page: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/en4UGXR7

Mindset really is the key to most things. Let me give you an example... I hugely dislike running. I don't enjoy it or want to do it even though I know it's benefits to me. I'm also asthmatic, slightly dramatic about the weather I'm running in and generally very slow when I'm on the move! However I have run two 10k races in my life because I believed enough in the causes I was raising money for, which then trumped any reason there was to not run. When I went on a mindset course earlier this year I had a good hard think about things and decided that this was fully in my control and that perhaps I wanted to be fit and healthy enough that I was willing to train so that I could go and run 5k whenever I felt like it. Well, guess what? I didn't care enough to make myself do it and only managed one park run between January and September. Then along comes a text from my wonderful friend who works for Home for Good asking if anyone might like to enter the Great Bristol run next year. In that moment, everything in me just shouted YES, and I'll even sign up for the half marathon! Bonkers. But that's the power of motivation linked to something you really, really care about and that is what also contributed to shifting my mindset. At first it looked like knowing that I was someone who needed to just get moving more often so that race day wasn't a disaster. But it didn't take too long for me to start believing that I was someone who could regularly run long (to me) distances. I've gone from being someone who finds 5k a struggle and hasn't run further than 10k in one go to someone who runs more than 5k three times a week. I've done a 10k run three weeks in a row and over the course of last week ran a total of 24.4km. That is mind blowing to me. But really it's all because of Home for Good. If you want to help them continue to do an amazing job in the world of fostering and adoption or if my story (and ongoing dislike) of running created any kind of emotional response in you then you might like to donate to the cause here: https://lnkd.in/eBpy6qkn If you don't want to do that but want to tell me any funny or awful running stories then I'm here for that too.

Almaty Marathon moving the community beyond the finish line #bne #bneEditorsPicks #Kazakhstan Over the years the Almaty Marathon has grown to become the largest marathon in Central Asia and has effects far beyond the finish line. The event, one of the select few charitable marathons globally, aims not only to promote health and an active lifestyle but also works to tackle broader societal challenges. What began as a small local race has now transformed into a major international event, drawing runners from over 44 countries. Last year, more than 12,000 participants took part, showing just how much the marathon has grown in popularity. But it's not just about the numbers—the marathon has put Almaty on the map for sports enthusiasts and tourists alike. It’s a chance for the city to shine, with local businesses reaping the benefits. Hotels, restaurants, and transport services experience a significant boost in activity as visitors flood in, contributing millions of tenge to the local economy.

🌿 💚Move More, Spend Less: Affordable Fitness for Everyone! 🌿 💚 I very much believe that movement should be accessible to, and enjoyed by all, regardless of financial resources. Here are some ideas... 🌿 Free outdoor gym equipment may be available in a local park. Why not team up with a friend and have a workout buddy? No gym equipment locally? Think about building a network of walking buddies. 🌿 Parkrun (parkrun.org.uk) is a free 5K event that you can walk, jog or run every Saturday morning. 🌿 Outdoor swimming isn't just free, but can make you feel fabulous and energised too! The Outdoor Swimming Society links you up with local wild swimming groups and provides safety advice; https://lnkd.in/evhBi__e Their website has an article on how to be an Autumn swimmer! 🌿 Bit cold outside right now? There are thousands of free workouts on YouTube, including many options for those with limited mobility and with particular health conditions. The Body Coach and Yoga with Adriene are tried, tested and trusted options. 🌿 Studies are showing that exercise 'snacking' throughout the day has equal benefits to a longer workout, and is particularly beneficial to those with desk-jobs. Health coach tip: fit them in between work tasks. Here are some ideas: stretches, press-ups, dumbbell (or canned food!) reps, balance on one leg for 1 minute each side, lunges, squats.

Bike Swaps in May 2024 Edmonton Bike Swaps - what’s new, what’s old, and how you can help us help others. 01 May 2024 - Alberta Bike Swap was founded in 2011 to provide a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes. Over the last 13 years Chris and Laura Grant have swapped thousands of tech-checked and serial-number recorded bikes. They’ve also been a conduit for thousands of donated bikes and they fund safe cycling in Alberta through the only recognized and standardized cycling education program – CAN-BIKE. What’s new? 1. There are two Edmonton Bike Swap events: May 11 at MacEwan University north side underground parking lot 10803 – 105 Ave NW and June 8 at CCT Golf Dome 11925 Kingsway NW. 2. Alberta Bike Swap is hosting a bike donation drive for Sports Central at both Edmonton Bike Swaps; 3. Alberta Bike Swap is building the CAN-BIKE certified effective cycling instructor base for the next generation. The first stage is a Level 4 Course May 25-26 and the Instructor Workshop May 30 - June 2. What’s old? This is still old: Ask anyone in Alberta whether they’ve heard about Alberta Bike Swap and you’ll typically get, “yes, I’ve heard of them”. This is getting really old, so please help us get the word out. What’s important? Alberta Bike Swap are honoured to be Bike Index Ambassadors and will continue preventing the selling and buying of stolen bikes; Sport Central’s mission is to empower kids, one piece of sports equipment at a time. The power of a bike is not limited to the hours of enjoyment a kid will experience, but also opens a new world of independence, physical activity, and offers an additional method of transportation. Last year, Sport Central Association saw a 48% increase in utilization of their services. The Bike program alone saw a 70% increase, and this is where you come in – please consider donating your outgrown or unused bicycles at either Edmonton Bike Swap or one of their other 46 donation locations so these bikes can go to those in need. #bikes #bikeswap #alberta Laura Grant https://lnkd.in/gPDCSjU2
