PPL's ...or PPB's? Well this is my derivitive from residential parcel lockers and relates to personal parcel lockers or boxes :) I've never been a believer due to: 1. the need for the courier to get to one personal box with arguably 1.2 parcels per stop 2. the fact that security can be an issue if several coiuriers visit the same beox before the consignee collects the parcels 3. the fact that capacity will likely be an issue, especially at peak Smart locks, whcich can make your garage or communal concierge room into an XXL locker are more my thing! To find out more, take a look at the latest Last Mile Prophets video with Parcel Pending by Quadient's Gary Winter and Last Mile Experts Marek Rozycki. The practice of selling lost or undelivered parcels by weight is an intriguing strategy that some delivery companies are adopting to address the issue of unclaimed packages. While it may seem unconventional, there are several factors to consider when evaluating whether other delivery companies should follow suit: Potential Benefits Waste Reduction: This approach helps reduce waste by giving unclaimed parcels a second chance at being utilized rather than being destroyed or left in warehouses indefinitely. Revenue Generation: Selling these parcels provides an additional revenue stream for delivery companies, helping to offset some of the costs associated with undelivered items. Consumer Interest: There appears to be significant consumer interest in this “mystery box” concept, with some people queuing for up to an hour to participate in these sales. Potential Drawbacks Legal and Ethical Concerns: There may be legal and ethical considerations regarding the sale of unclaimed parcels, particularly in countries with strict regulations on handling undelivered mail. Customer Trust: This practice could potentially impact customer trust if consumers perceive it as a lack of effort in delivering packages to their rightful recipients. Privacy Issues: There may be privacy concerns related to selling parcels that could contain personal information or items. Why Parcels Get Lost Several factors contribute to parcels getting lost in the delivery process: Human Error: With the enormous volume of parcels handled daily, mistakes in handling, tracking, or moving packages can occur. Incorrect Addressing: Inaccurate or incomplete delivery addresses are a common reason for undelivered parcels. Label Issues: If a label becomes detached or is misprinted, the parcel may be unidentifiable and get lost in transit. Logistical Challenges: Transit delays, customs clearance issues, or unforeseen circumstances like severe weather can lead to parcels being misplaced or delayed. Misdelivery: In some cases, packages may be delivered to the wrong recipient due to similar names or addresses. Conclusion While selling lost parcels by weight is an innovative approach to addressing the issue of unclaimed packages, it may not be suitable for all delivery companies or markets. The decision to implement such a strategy should be carefully considered, taking into account local regulations, customer expectations, and potential impacts on the company’s reputation and operations. Instead of focusing solely on selling lost parcels, delivery companies might consider investing in technologies and processes to reduce the occurrence of lost packages in the first place. This could include improving tracking systems, enhancing address verification processes, and implementing more robust quality control measures throughout the delivery chain
A French delivery company is offering consumers the opportunity to purchase lost parcels by the kilo. The move encourages consumers to take a punt on lost parcels in the hope something will be valuable inside, thereby helping to reduce waste and clear warehouse space. Is this a strategy other delivery companies should follow? And why do these parcels get lost in the first place?
