Agriculture, representing 30% of Africa’s GDP and employing 60% of its labour force, is under increasing strain from climate change. Despite this, recent data (Africa: The Big Deal) shows agri-food start-ups received less than 5% of $18.5b raised by African start-ups since 2019. Join Maxime Bayen, Operating Partner at Catalyst Fund for an important roundtable discussion exploring how the industry can support this underfunded sector. The session will highlight strategies to de-risk agtech investments and attract capital towards Africa's transition to climate-resilient ag and food systems. Very informative panel discussion focusing on the power of many in addressing Global Food System Challenges Through a BioEconomy facilitated by Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. (Seeding The Future Foundation). Mathias Mogge (Welthungerhilfe (WHH)) stressed the importance of supporting small farmers with technology and encouraging bold social entrepreneurs, using AgriShare Uganda as an example. He urged governments to translate global policies to benefit local farmers, and emphasized the need for investment in research & development as a case for The Toothpick Project. Ertharin Cousin (Food Systems for the Future ) highlighted the need for financial capital to scale up, warning that governments are retreating from their CAADP commitments. Mandla Nkomo (Partners in Food Solutions) emphasized Africa’s growing role in the bioeconomy, while Vikash K Abraham Naandi Foundation) advocated for market-led, climate-smart production. #GlobalBioeconomySummit2024

For long smallholder farmers have been underserved, and existing solutions have always been either complex, slow, or generic, and not addressing the unique needs of this market segment. For convenience, financial institutions branded this market highly risky, to justify their inability to innovate and figure out how to tap into this massive market opportunity of 250 million smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. It’s common to hear statements, “you will know why that market is untapped”, all these are sentiments to justify the inability to break the comfort zones, and aggressively innovate for a segment that produces 70% of the food we consume daily in Africa.

Here’s my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind 2024 was a transformative year for Farmstarck We tackled not just Nigeria’s cassava paradox but the entire agricultural supply chain and value chain—creating inter-border trade opportunities, connecting farmers to larger markets, and empowering underserved communities. Key Moments That Defined Our Year: 1. The Cassava Paradox: Nigeria grows enough cassava to feed Africa but can’t export $1M worth.” This sparked conversations across the agricultural ecosystem. 2. Unlocking Innovation at Lagos State Agricultural Training Institute: Farmstarck’s role in revolutionizing inventory, data handling, and market access became crystal clear. 3. Global Recognition: Ranked #30 in Agritech out of 1.9M startups on F6S—a validation of our vision to create real impact. Our 2024 Highlights: • Empowered farmers with tools and market access. • Built a marketplace connecting stakeholders across borders. • Leveraged technology to serve unbanked communities and enhance agricultural efficiency. 2025 and Beyond: We’re scaling solutions—expanding data-driven tools, bridging inter-border trade, and proving African agriculture is about transformation, not survival. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🙄 For financial inclusion in sustainable agriculture to truly benefit smallholder farmers in Africa, addressing impunity and corruption in governance is essential. Too often, leaders prioritize personal gain over public welfare, with funds meant for agricultural support misappropriated for personal luxuries. This disconnect leaves rural communities underserved, as smallholder farmers struggle without the necessary financial backing to invest in resilient, sustainable farming practices. Impunity and corruption are deep-rooted barriers to achieving food security and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. Corrupt practices drain resources from essential services, leaving millions vulnerable to hunger and poverty. Leaders, tasked with uplifting communities, often misuse public funds, undermining the continent’s agricultural potential. For Africa to thrive, leaders must embrace integrity, ensuring that financial support reaches those who need it most—particularly smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of African agriculture. As Nelson Mandela wisely stated, “𝘈 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴.” True leadership in Africa will be measured by the commitment to uplift the most disadvantaged—farmers who work tirelessly yet remain marginalized. Financial inclusion for these smallholder farmers demands a shift in governance, prioritizing transparency and accountability to foster an environment where sustainable agriculture can flourish. Only by tackling bad governance can Africa achieve a future where financial support is accessible, food security is attainable, and sustainable development is within reach.
