💷 The highest fees ever seen in the City on a single deal? Kirkland & Ellis and Freshfields are set to receive bumper pay days for their work on the £5.4bn mega-buyout of Hargreaves Lansdown. Kirkland advised the acquisition vehicle backed by private equity firms including CVC and Platinum Ivy, while Freshfields acted for Hargreaves Lansdown. Kirkland is expected to bank the majority of the £13.7 million the buyer set aside for the deal, and Freshfields the bulk of the £10.1 million that Hargreaves Lansdown will spend [Law.com] A partner at a rival firm said the figures are among the highest ever seen in the City on a single deal. The news points to a wider trend of rate hikes among big firms. PwC’s annual law firm survey for 2024 found that the UK’s top 10 law firms are charging clients almost 40% more per hour than they were five years ago. UK firms responding to the aggressive growth of US firms (which typically charge more) in London has been a key driver.
