Aha Moment number 2: This came from conversation in an introductory training for supervisors with Fiona Howard about how supervisors guide the structure of the session while supervisees guide the content. This can reinforce the power imbalance if the supervisor is overly directive about how they want the session to be structured, or force what is brought up. One participant was a ballroom dancer who likened it to the way that the lead in dancing does not seek to be the star by controlling the steps. Rather, they plan which sequence is coming next to highlight the skill and ability of their partner. What a strengths based approach, and one we can all bring to guided professional reflection!

A head coach will open up doors and unlock a fighter’s potential by creating the right environment. They can step back and objectively assess your progress while letting you know when to step on the gas or take time away. The head coach will remove the guess work and create a unifying thread that runs through all training. If you are planning to fight, identifying this role is the first step you should take.

Player improvement: Look to improve everywhere you can. If you aren't training then read books on successful people, watch good footballers live and watch documentaries at home. This is a clip from one about Terry Venables and discusses a very simple training issue.

I was speaking with a friend yesterday and explaining some changes we'll be making to our Defensive Shooting program next year. We were discussing awards for meeting different shooting standards. He said, "You've seen me shoot. Do you think I could ever meet those standards?" I answered, "Yes. But you don't shoot enough." You see, shooting, like any skill, is compound. I mean, the more we train and the more we practice, small gains are made each time. But these small gains begin to add up. Any skill you want to master is a marathon run in inches. It doesn't happen overnight. It takes dedication and practice. Lots of practice. He replied, "I wish I could go shooting more but work is so busy." I replied, "It's all about our choices and priorities. Where are we now?" We were at a craft brewery. While relaxation is necessary, all of us make room for the priorities in our lives. I am a strong advocate for going to the shooting range once per month, taking at least one advanced training class once per year, and doing ten times the amount of dry fire to live fire. I'm not throwing shade at him or anyone. My only point is there is always room for improvement if we choose to make the time and put in the work necessary to improve.
