Also happening at #WindTech24: a look at #lifecycle #optimisation of #windfarms Shane Ó Húilín from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) covered the inspection, monitoring, and durability testing of an #endoflife wind farm in Ireland, demonstrating how such processes can provide long-term, evidence-based assessments of turbine degradation and contribute to #digitaltwins for lifetime performance and safety analysis at a farm level. Stéphane Pédeboy from METEORAGE highlighted the significant risk of #lightning to the wind energy sector, the necessity of wind turbine inspections post-thunderstorms, and the use of Lightning Locating Systems for efficient and targeted checks, with a study aiming to improve verification triggers using combined criteria And Alexis Cousin from IFP Energies nouvelles presented a new workflow for probabilistic design of #offshore wind turbines, which optimizes material use by considering various uncertainties, demonstrated on a UK offshore wind farm case study. https://lnkd.in/erT6fz8K

We're continuing to explore #lifecycleoptimisation at #WindTech24. Eric Tromeur looked at the feasibility of using SCADA data and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to predict harmful status codes in wind turbines, thereby offering potential for predictive maintenance and reducing costs, with future work aiming to increase the number of predictable status codes and extend the prediction horizon. Michael Stamm gave a lively presentation of an innovative, #AI-based inspection and #blade damage assessment methodology for wind turbines using #thermographic and visual images to detect and localize blade damages, promising less inspection time, less turbine downtime, while providing analytical insights to increase turbine efficiency and renewable energy production. Tomasz Sieradzan reported on a study on how to manage the risk of crack formation and propagation on wind turbine blades, particularly on larger models, finding that adjusting #inspection schedules and planning for relative risk levels across operational timeframes can significantly reduce damage and increase turbine efficiency. And Clément Jacquet presented the development of new methods for optimizing #operationsandmaintenance (O&M), reducing costs, and improving the annual energy production (#AEP) of wind turbines, with a focus on integrating capital and operational expenses, wind farm characteristics, turbine models, and financial models for onshore and offshore applications, and using #reliabilityforecasting and #healthmonitoring models for resource planning and decision-making. The #SETPlan conference 2024 is ongoing in Budapest! The Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) facilitates cooperation in European research and innovation and the development of clean energy solutions to accelerate the energy transition. Each year, during the conference our scientists present a report on the progress of this initiative and the status of clean investments in Europe. This year, we highlight the importance of linking the SET Plan with the Net Zero Industry Act – the EU regulation that aims at boosting the production of clean energy technologies in Europe. This legal linkage will help strengthen connections between European research, innovation and manufacturing of innovative solutions and the coordination of common policies. #SETPlan2024

Jake Badger and Wiebke Langreder led us through another session on #blockage and #wakes at WindEurope's #WindTech24 We heard from Joseph Anthony Vitulli, M.Sc who conducted a comparative analysis of industry-accepted engineering wake models and weather-based simulations for offshore wind farms, revealing larger deviations in internal wake impacts under tight spacing restrictions and emphasizing the need for improved understanding of wake effects, particularly for high-density developments and large turbines. Christopher Rodaway gave an update on the #GloBE project and presented the full and final processed measured wind/SCADA dataset. The presentation included model comparisons, and highlighted areas of consensus vs areas where uncertainty and disagreement remain, flagging the areas for further research. Oscar Manuel Garcia Santiago explained how to improve the modeling of wind farm wakes using new parameters in the WRF mesoscale model in handling Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE), thereby enhancing the assessment of intra-farm and inter-farm wake losses and aiding international coordination in offshore resource use. And Tom Levick demonstrated that the upgraded “multi-stability CFD.ML” model, which considers atmospheric boundary inputs, can effectively predict wake and blockage loss factors for large wind farms, thereby providing more accurate estimates and reducing uncertainties in financial costs and business cases for specific projects. https://lnkd.in/e-bAAnzR EMD International A/S Ramboll RWE DTU - Technical University of Denmark DNV
