In my latest Streaming Ratings Report, I introduced a new concept: the Argylle Treatment. In short, films that go to theaters and flop get tons of bad publicity. Films that go straight-to-streaming and flop, don’t. (And I decided to name this phenomenon.) This dramatic drop has been driven by several factors: the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, shifting priorities to streaming platforms, and studios playing it safe with fewer original projects. Red One's 50 million viewer success on streaming points to Hollywood’s new strategy with films. You couldn’t escape hearing about this movie, so interesting to see how it’s actually done. Amazon says Red One had a record-breaking 50M worldwide viewers in its opening weekend on Prime Video. Which is interesting because it made just $32M when it debuted in theaters in the US last month. More on that in a second.
