I want to share the wisdom from some of my favorite fierce females this month in honor of #womenshistorymonth. I listened to Steven Bartlett's (from BBC's Dragon's Den) interview with Shark Tank ABC's Barbara Corcoran. I was impressed with his style of asking hard questions in an incredibly compassionate way. I'm awarding serious bonus points for #emotionalquotient! Give it a listen over lunch or when you have a little windshield time. It's incredibly insightful conversation IMHO. Corcoran said: Failure is not an option. Time and again she watches the companies she discovered on Shark Tank. She finds that right after the high of being an "overnight success" on the show, she can tell the destiny of her relationship after they hit the first rough patch. She'll call at around 2 or 3 months and say, "How's it going?" Those that point to people to blame and have abundant excuses, she devotes very little of her time to. Those that are straight shooters and have 2 or 3 ideas on how to get out of the ditch demonstrate they are #problemsolvers. She will generously invest her precious minutes with those #entrepreneurs. ⏲ Insults can be an incredible motivator. She eventually figured out they were gifts because they fuel you. For Barbara, proving them wrong was as big of a reason as any to hustle until she was the #1 #RealEstate firm in #nyc. ⛽ Creativity is an amazing character trait and grossly underestimated. 💡 Firing negative people is the most important thing you can do as a #leader to protect the culture and the gems that make your organization special. Bad attitudes suck energy out of the organization. They are thieves in her eyes. 🎯 SPOT ON! 🎯 She appreciates people who tell her what they want up front (#BLUF to all my #military connections). I wonder if there's any correlation to her 38-year marriage to a United States Naval Academy fellow? For me - that's how and why I have honed that skill. 🎖 She thinks numbers are the least important thing to be awesome at in business. The most important thing is to be exceptional with people and have ambition. 😍 Always get back up after a failure. I've told my kids time and again, it's only a mistake if you make it twice.
