Our main mission for the NW Hort Expo was to was to see if Outfield is the right fit for fruit growers in Washington State. We’ve had some success with deploying Outfield in other regions, but this was our first big event in Washington State. Working alongside Tyton Aviation we’ve done a lot this past year: engaging with growers, carrying out trials, integrating with precision spraying systems and supporting the Washington State University Smart Orchard project hosted by NWFM, LLC. It’s clear that the Washington Apple industry is very active. Despite the challenges in the industry right now, there’s so much happening to help growers do more with less, and it’s a real pleasure to see the energy of the industry in the pacific northwest. As we stepped off the stage after speaking at the technical session, one of the hosts said to me “I think you’re going to find a few growers coming to speak to you after this”, and he was absolutely right. Some exciting projects in the pipeline now for 2025 to: - deploy autonomous Drone-in-a-Box systems surveying 350 acres every 3 days; - provide maps, metrics and imagery of the orchard throughout the season; and - integrate with a whole suite of precision spraying technology for variable rate applications. We think that’s mission accomplished. #NorthwestHortShow #PrecisionAgriculture #AgTech #HorticultureInnovation #FutureOfFarming

🌱 Yesterday, I had the privilege of participating in a cutting-edge conference on technological innovation in agriculture, organized by the Volcani Institute and the Weed Science Association. The event was packed with fascinating lectures and insights into the future of AgTech, with topics ranging from big data models and AI-based solutions to drones, and satellite imagery, sensors, and smart greenhouses. We also delved into the exciting applications of plant hormones, biological IPM, and even weed electrification for sustainable farming. 👩🏼🌾 While the technological advancements were truly impressive, for me, the most valuable part of the event was during the breaks—the human connection. It’s in these moments that industry professionals and researchers, both familiar and new, come together to exchange ideas and build collaborations. These conversations are invaluable, as they foster continuous learning and create the relationships that drive future innovation. 🙌 A big thank you to the organizers for creating an environment that not only fosters learning but also encourages meaningful connections. It’s these interactions and partnerships that will continue to shape the future of agriculture, driving innovation and collaboration far beyond the conference itself. 🌟 I was also thrilled to see that a third of the attendees were young professionals, and another third were women! It’s inspiring to witness the growing diversity in agriculture, and I look forward to seeing how this will shape the future of the field. #AgricultureInnovation #AgTech #Sustainability #Networking #AgriculturalResearch #ContinuousLearning

How do superintendents mount their turfRad sensors to maximize efficiency? At Victoria Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, Superintendent J. Paul Robertson and his team repurposed an older Toro Triplex mower into a dedicated data-collection system. By mounting two turfRad sensors on a custom framework, they gather their soil moisture data in under two hours - without disrupting mowing schedules. This innovative approach ensures consistent insights and makes the most of existing equipment. Discover how innovation meets efficiency and get inspired for your own setup! CoRoSect , a Horizon 2020 project led by Maastricht University that started in January 2021, has successfully concluded in March 2024. The project’s goal was to foster collaborative environments between humans and robots, while also streamlining labour-intensive tasks in insect farming production. The overarching goal was to significantly contribute to the optimization and automatization of small and medium-sized insect farms that breed and rear black soldier flies, mealworms and crickets. Key Highlights of CoRoSect's Impact: * Successful execution of four pilots at INVERTAPRO, Italian Cricket Farm, Nasekomo, and Entomotech. * More than 50 scientific and business robotic players benefited from CoRoSect demonstrations. * A novel service-oriented ICPS (Integrated Cyber Physical System) capable to support more than 97% of key target task planning and real-time adaptation scenarios in insect farming. * More than 90% accuracy of robots’ efficiency to classify larvae. * New multimodal sensing method, including active sensing with more than 90% detection rate. Exciting News: TreeTools Realtime Forest Inventory Beta Release! We are thrilled to announce the beta release of our TreeTools Realtime Forest Inventory, now available for users to download and try out. Join our beta test program to enhance New Zealand’s use of AI, making it practical for foresters to use both in the field and offline. With TreeTools, you can fly your own drone to collect virtual plots, providing quick and effective stocking estimates. This allows for direct operational feedback onsite within moments, without any complexity. You can also upload the results to applications like Avenza Maps for immediate contractor feedback and review. This project has been developed with funding assistance from the Precision Silviculture Programme, a Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures (SFFF) partnership between MPI and the forest industry, led by Forest Growers Research. During the development phase, TreeTools is freely available to encourage industry feedback and user contributions of imagery, which will help train the detectors to get better and cover a wider range of forest types.
