Did you know more that more than a quarter of active-duty military families have experienced food insecurity? Military families are often most vulnerable to food insecurity when they must discard costly pantry essentials during a move from base to base. To help, US Foods has partnered with the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN) to provide more than 1,800 military families who are moving to Ft. Cavazos, Texas with Pantry Restock Boxes valued at $150. In support of this support, a recent opinion piece appeared in the Military Times by MFAN CEO, Shannon Razsadin, and our CEO, David Flitman: https://utm.io/uhype In the piece, Shannon and Dave share important insights on why some military families are experiencing food insecurity — and ways to address the issue. Take a look at our NATO counterparts’ field rations. I’m a big fan of the NATO 24 hour format versus 3x MRE for several reasons. 1) Breakfast foods in AM. In most of their meals they will have museli, cereal bars, trail mixes, or fruit mixes. Nothing worse than trying to choke down a pork patty MRE at 0 dark 30. I would venture that breakfast foods in the AM would improve consumption rates and decrease under fueling in the field. 2) Pack volume. 3x MREs means 3x spoons, 3x accessory packages, and the associated inner and outer packaging. The 24 hour NATO rations that I’ve used are much smaller than 3x MREs. Less weight on your back and more room for equipment. Currently our only 24 hour operational ration is the First Strike ration which is designed for the first 72 hours of a conflict and contains 2850 kcal. Should the US develop a STANAG compatible operational ration to increase interoperability? I say yes!! #military #nutrition #rations #nato #soldier #performance U.S. Army DEVCOM Soldier Center
Every army in NATO has its own field ration 🍽️. While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field 💪 Tap to discover the diverse culinary world of NATO military rations ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gdYS2MBf

New USDA Economic Research Service report released today on #activeduty #foodinsecurity in 2018 and 2020 using nationally representative data from the United States Department of Defense. In this report my coauthor, Matthew Beymer, and I compared food insecurity among the US military and civilian adult populations using data from the 2018 and 2020 Status of Forces Survey of Active-Duty Members and Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement. Our findings show the prevalence of food insecurity was 2.5 times higher among the military population (25.3 percent) compared to the civilian adult population (10.1 percent) in 2018 and 2020. The prevalence of food insecurity and very low food security was also generally higher among military subpopulations, when defined by demographics and compared with demographically similar civilian adult populations in 2018 and 2020. In 2018 and 2020, military food insecurity was more prevalent among active-duty service members who were between the ages of 17 and 25, with a high school diploma (or equivalent) or some college education, identifying as Hispanic or from other non-Hispanic races, and with an unemployed spouse. Today is LOAD day. That means my household goods (HHG) go on a moving truck today. **We’ve moved 3 of the past 4 summers. This is the third move in just 36 months.** My load team doesn’t start until after lunch, so I’m at elementary school celebrations with our oldest. (He is leaving his 4th school as he finishes 5th grade). Just to the left of this picture is 100 kids yelling and laughing and bowling and loving their last days together- many of whom are also military kids. **Our story is not unique. It’s like so many of our peers.** When I #advocate for quality of life for #militaryfamilies, I’m advocating for moments of stability and normalcy. Moments to attend field trips and create regular childhood memories. Because being a military family is hard enough without needing to worry about basic needs like putting food on the table. Sadly, for 1 in 4 active duty families serving our country, they’re balancing this chaotic life with the reality of #foodinsecurity (aka not sure if they can put enough food on the table tonight). **If you’d like to know how to help military families facing food insecurity, check out MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), National Military Family Association, Stronghold Food Pantry, or Military Family Advisory Network for the most urgent policy changes, community connection ideas, and latest research.

Harnessing the wartime spirit #FutureForwarding When the world was plunged into war in 1939, Eskort faced a new set of challenges. Staff members enlisted, and procuring spares and materials became an uphill battle. Then an extraordinary order came in: a million tins of sausages for Allied troops. This meant investing in extra canning machinery and pushing the boundaries of our capabilities. In 1941, we expanded further, building two smokehouses to supply more than 12 tonnes of bacon weekly to convoys calling at Durban harbour. Demand soared and production had to rise to the occasion. It was a period of extraordinary endurance and innovation. Fast forward to today, and Eskort still thrives on the same resilient spirit. We’ve weathered storms, learned from our history, and emerged stronger. We’re not just about sausages anymore (although those Gold Standard pork sausages remain a hit). We’re about making a positive impact on our environment, with our two supplier-owned vulture restaurants that are sustaining a threatened species, and communities, through our commitment to keeping small towns alive. And of course, we remain determined to bring consumers the finest proudly South African, world-class, antibiotic-free products. They’re as good for you today as they were for the soldiers who won a world war.
