Ryde Technology CEO Tobias W. Balchen gives Zag the inside story on how high fees and strict regulations are pushing micromobility operators out of the Nordic market as Ryde steadily executes its ‘smart growth’ strategy brick by brick. In conversation with Zag Industry Expert Lars Christian Grødem-Olsen (Mobility Consultant), Tobias reveals how some Nordic regulations are banning the use of e-scooters at night to prevent intoxicated riding, why Ryde is passing some parking fines on to users and the ‘overkill’ on insurance regulations.  “It’s good to have insurance because accidents can happen, but the current policy in Norway is overkill. Under car liability laws, you have to insure for unlimited damage potential and 100 million for third-party property damage. What is the probability that you can destroy something for 100 million kroner on a scooter? "A very interesting study from Solera, Inc. which aligns to our own research. As a society, we are all increasingly concerned about our environment and more and more, we are looking for ways to make better sustainability choices in our lives. Customers are now demanding greener options when considering their car repairs, and interestingly, this research has shown that customers will choose garages for their green credentials, too. We know the UK car park is getting older, with the number of cars on UK roads that are 10 years or older at an all-time high, so as a nation we are looking after and running our cars for longer. Whilst green parts should be at the heart of this, the market is still underdeveloped in the UK and there is much opportunity for market maturity as we have seen in other countries. If, for example, we think about insurance repairs, generally in the UK, customers still don’t have a great choice, whereas that’s not the case at all in, for example, France & Sweden. With political pressure all around us – United Nations’ road to net zero (remember COP26?), the European Green Deal, the UK’s strategy for net-zero – we have to work together and be more active to create the framework and solutions that customers are telling us they now want; if we don’t, change will be forced upon us. We’ve been working on a range of solutions ourselves – including with Solera’s products Audasource & Inpart – with a number of repairers and insurers for green part provision, with much success. Even though we’ve always sold parts to bodyshops, we’ve seen these sales increase by over 5 times in the last 12 months alone, with fulfilment in some cases >25% and a market leading returns rate for quality of less than 0.5% – in the process, saving hundreds of thousands of pounds against new prices. Our progress in this area is driven by one thing: creating solutions which customers want." The European Parliament approved a new directive that requires EU member states to implement legislation by January 1, 2024, which mandates insurance for electric scooters 🚴♂️. This applies to models that: - Exceed 25 km/h in maximum speed 🏎️, or - Weigh over 25 kg or have speeds above 14 km/h. In Hungary approximately 30,000-40,000 micromobility vehicles will require mandatory third-party liability insurance. Other vehicles such as electric bikes 🚲, traditional scooters and bicycles will have liability coverage available as part of home insurance 🏡.
