Australia has a new National Park that spans more than 37,000 hectares, is home to more than 158 native species, and forms a wildlife corridor of almost 100,000 hectares in the north-west of NSW. It is a significant milestone in the fight against biodiversity loss. Comeroo Station, purchased by the NSW Government last year, forms the foundation of the newly launched Cuttaburra National Park. This acquisition was supported by The Nature Conservancy, with generous contributions from the Wyss Foundation and Holdfast Collective, Patagonia’s non-profit shareholder. The new park contains a diversity of habitats including alluvial floodplains, swamps, permanent waterholes and wetlands, which support a variety of plants and animals, including three New South Wales and nationally endangered ecological communities. More than a quarter of the park forms part of the Yantabulla Swamp, a mosaic of channels and wetlands which has been identified as the most important water bird breeding site in the region. This achievement reflects the impact of partnerships between state governments, philanthropic foundations and conservational organisations in achieving large-scale protection outcomes to help meet Australia's commitment to protecting 30% of lands, freshwaters, and ocean ecosystems by 2030. Mangroves are the bridges that marry land and sea together🌱 Mangroves are an essential element of coastline ecosystems, performing many functions for both land and sea. They provide protection against water surge and soil erosion, and provide a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Unfortunately, recent hurricanes and human activities have severely damaged these essential ecosystems. As co-founders of the Bahamas Mangrove Alliance (BMA), The Perry Institute for Marine Science is dedicated to promoting mangrove conservation and restoration in The Bahamas alongside our co-founders Waterkeepers Bahamas, and Bonefish Tarpon Trust. We are thrilled to announce a major milestone: we have secured a highly strategic 865-acre property. This acquisition finalizes the land needed to restore one of the largest wildlife corridors in the tropics, connecting 250,000 previously isolated acres in the Western Andes of Colombia. The Western Andes is one of the planet's most biologically diverse regions, housing numerous threatened, endemic, and undiscovered species. However, these high-elevation cloud forests face immense threats from climate change and human activities. Agricultural expansion has fragmented Colombia’s forests, and climate change forces many species to migrate upslope, only to be blocked by degraded landscapes. But together, we are making a difference. By reforesting degraded landscapes and connecting forest fragments we are creating vital escape routes and protecting critical habitats. Securing this property is a monumental step in ensuring the survival of these species and preserving this unique ecosystem. While there is more work ahead to restore the remaining degraded areas, we wanted to celebrate this victory for conservation with you. 💡Spotlight on Partnership for Species: Sitatunga Conservation Status: Least Concern 🟢 (decreasing) Have you ever tried to walk with flippers on? The sitatunga, a unique aquatic antelope, has specially adapted hooves which prevent them from sinking into the soft soil underwater. This also makes them quite clumsy on dry ground. Unfortunately, populations are decreasing from habitat loss. Aside from fewer swamps, habitat fragmentation increases their risk of predation. Protecting Koalas in Australia through community based wildlife corridors! Bangalow Koalas is making a significant impact in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Launched in 2016, this initiative started with neighbors protecting a small koala habitat stretch. Now, it's grown into a large-scale effort to create wildlife corridors, connecting fragmented koala habitats and ensuring their survival. Why it's Necessary: Koala populations are declining rapidly due to habitat loss from logging, wildfires, and development. These corridors allow safe movement, reduce disease risks, and increase genetic diversity. Achievements: Over 336,000 trees have been planted on 119 properties, with a target of 500,000 by 2025. The project has engaged 548 volunteers and created 15.4 hectares of new habitat in Byron Shire alone. Community-Based Model: The project relies heavily on local involvement. It started with neighbors and now includes local councils, Landcare groups, community groups, and private landowners. Activities like tree planting events and educational programs foster community engagement and support. Challenges: Securing ongoing funding, maintaining political support, and addressing climate change impacts are key hurdles. Future steps include expanding the corridor network and increasing community engagement. Supporting our hedgerows: A gift that keeps on growing 🌱🐦 Since 2021, the Lake District Foundation has awarded over £25,000 in grants for hedgerows, helping to plant more than 1,000 meters across the region! 🌳🌼 Thanks to your support, our 2023 Christmas campaign added another £1,825 to the Real Hedge Fund. Why are hedgerows so important? 🌳 Biodiversity boost: Hedges provide vital habitats for wildlife like dormice, barn owls, bats and lots of bird species 🌱 Climate champions: They store carbon, keep soils healthy and reduce the impact of droughts and flooding. 🚰 Natural filters: Hedges help maintain clean water by reducing fertiliser, pesticides and sediment runoff into rivers and lakes. Sadly, we’re losing nearly 6,000 miles of hedges each year, with less than 1,200 miles replanted.
