As a industry, we are at the crossroads of what "you all" want the law profession, to look like? We all know in a short 10 years what the demographics will be in our nation. As we will soon embark on another journey with a POTUS and his followers who have the notion that a "diverse, inclusive and equal" society at large is somehow "woke" whatever the hell that means? I do know that in order for my law firm clients to survive the mad run to the exit of my "baby boomer" generation to retirement, a few items talked about below must occur. I have been quite "blessed" with the knowledge and forethought, brought to the forefront of my mind from all the candidates and the clients I have been able to talk to in depth with about the law. Many, many strides have been made independent of governmental entities, by folks that wanted to see in their lifetimes, a more fair and equitable profession. Sandra Yamate, Robert Grey, Paula Edgar, Danielle Carr, David Sarnoff and so many others that have time after time when the waves of ignorance fall in around this profession, that will stand up and stand tall against those that find the status quo, much more comfortable than to change. As a friend said to me the other day, "law school, is only about changing a law student's mind from hope to dread, that everything around you is filled with risk and liability and it is a wonder, one might conclude that lawyers have the some of the greatest mental health issues compared to other professions. Though knowing all this, a lawyer is a necessary tool in a civilized society and within this society, a group of diverse attorneys are needed to stave off, the evils of western society, only we can help with keeping progress moving towards a more equitable society, only we that want to live in a society that everyone is treated with fairness and equality under the law, it starts with us. It takes courage to stand up against those that find their way is always right. As I look towards the end of this year, I find solace that there are more warriors, those both boisterous and stealth, who are fighting in their own way. We can not go back to our own tribes and hope to fight another day, we all must stand together in unity. We have allowed our detractors to set policy, to push us back into the shadows from where we are made to feel low and inadequate in our decisions. There are many more important issues that what happens in this profession and that being what it may, our profession is the linchpin in having a democracy, laws have never been fair or equal but greater minds have seen the errors of their ways and have pulled their consciousness to stand by the oaths of this profession and the oaths and beliefs of our constitution. We do not live and breath in a just and fair nation, everyday we see the atrocities we wrought on each other. Thought, we do have in our hearts and minds, the ways and the means to be a fairer and more just society, on that we can affirm that we can.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 All too often, those of us who work in medical devices see our value in the products themselves, or (for those of us in QA/RA) the regulations we are successfully navigating to get and keep them on the market. 🏥💼 I don't think we spend enough time appreciating the stories of the lives that have been extended and improved as the result of these devices. 🌟 March 11th provided one of the most moving examples I can think of, when Paul Alexander passed away after over 70 years in an iron lung. Paul contracted polio in 1952 at the age of 6, at a time when every parent lived in fear of their child contracting this disease. At that time treatment of symptomatic patients often required the use of an external, negative pressure ventilator (aka "iron lung") while they regained the ability to breathe unassisted. In rare cases (such as Paul's), the patient never fully recovers this ability, and needs to spend most of their time for the rest of their lives confined in this device. Paul spent the next 70 years accomplishing some pretty impressive feats: ➡️ Earned his high school diploma, bachelor's, and J.D. degrees, attending classes in person once he learned to breathe on his own for short periods of time ➡️ Practiced law for 30 years ➡️ Published a memoir, which he wrote and typed out over eight years by using a pen attached to a straw ➡️ Made paintings in a similar manner ➡️ Became a TikTok star, with more than 330,000 followers at the time of his death The iron lung (regulated under 868.5935 External negative pressure ventilator, in case you are interested) has almost entirely been replaced with better devices at this point, and successful vaccination campaigns have all but wiped this terrible disease from the planet. But Paul's life shows how much of a difference it really made. 🌍 Working in medical devices can be stressful, with requirements for safety and performance at a much higher level than most other industries, but it's examples like this that should help remind us all why we do what we do. 💪
