𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟕% 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐒𝐆 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞. Recent findings from PwC’s latest Corporate Directors Survey have really made me pause and rethink my understanding of ESG. Over 520 U.S. corporate directors, many from companies with over $1 billion in revenue, were interviewed by PwC, only 7% said ESG and sustainability are the same. This statistic is surprising and makes me question on how these terms are understood at the highest levels. The survey highlights a decline in the focus on ESG in boardrooms, with only 47% of respondents reporting that ESG is a regular agenda item—down from 52% last year and 55% previous to that. Why ? Ambiguity and the increasingly complex nature of ESG as contributing factors. Many directors reporting that 𝐄𝐒𝐆 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞. The challenge is real, but so is the opportunity. Leaders need to move beyond surface-level understanding and make ESG a cornerstone of long-term success.
