I'm happy to share my participation in the EASC 65th annual meeting today in my role as a regional representative for Europe and Central Asia at ISO, representing also IEC on this special occasion. My objective was to foster a productive exchange of knowledge and ideas between EASC and ISO. Here's a breakdown of the key takeaways: -ISO Expertise Meets EASC Priorities: I presented a comprehensive overview of ISO's structure, Regional Engagement Policy, and the ongoing ISO 2030 Strategy review. In turn, I gained valuable insights from EASC members on their specific standardization needs and areas of focus. This two-way dialogue is crucial for aligning ISO's global efforts with regional priorities. -Showcasing EASC members' participation in ISO activities through impactful programmes and capacity-building initiatives. -Building Bridges for Stronger Collaboration: I presented a strategic roadmap for enhanced collaboration between EASC and ISO. This included exploring participation in key programmes, such as active participation in the monthly Regional Forums I am hosting and moderating, sponsorhip oppotunities, ISO digital training opportunities and the newly established ISO networks on Education about Standardization and Sustainability, to name a few. This will allow EASC members to leverage ISO's global network and expertise while providing valuable regional perspectives to shape ISO's future direction. -Formalizing the Partnership: I emphasized the importance of finalizing the Cooperation Agreement between EASC and ISO. This formal partnership will solidify our commitment to working together and ensure a more unified approach to standardization and technical work across the region. #ISO #EASC #regionalstandardsorganization #standardization #internationalcooperation #65plenary #cooperationagreement

Having been appointed as Chair, I had the pleasure of leading UKAS’s recent Management System Certification Technical Advisory Committee (MSCTAC), held earlier this month. The committee's core objective, attended and influenced by UK industry bodies, is to provide valuable feedback and information to UKAS about management system certification. The MSCTAC will be held twice a year so I am keen to receive technical questions about UKAS accredited management system certification to feed into this committee. Topics covered during the meeting included: - Merger of the IAF and ILAC to become GLOBAC - Digital transformation - Upcoming revisions and amendments to standards such as ISO 9001, ISO - 14001 & ISO 45001 - New standards such as ISO 56001 for innovation Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2m5vfGJ

WHO FIRST HAD THE IDEA TO DEVELOP ISO? The idea to create the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) came after World War II when global leaders saw a need for unified standards in industries and international trade. This would make it easier for countries to work together and for the economy to grow smoothly. Key Figures Behind the Creation of ISO: - Dr. Karl-Otto Böhme (Germany) – Dr. Böhme, a German expert in standardization, played a major role in setting up international standards after WWII. - His influence helped shape early discussions on forming an international standards organization. - The International Federation of the National Standardizing Associations (ISA) – Before ISO, the ISA was already working on global standards but had limited focus. - ISA’s work helped set the stage for ISO’s broader mission. - The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – As trade grew after WWII, the UN recognized the importance of international standards to boost trade and cooperation. ECOSOC supported discussions that eventually led to ISO’s formation. Dr. Böhme, as a German industrialist, was influential during this recovery period. His vision for standardizing practices supported the needs of a growing global economy, which helped pave the way for ISO’s creation. The Formation of ISO: - In 1946, representatives from 25 countries gathered in London at a meeting hosted by the British Standards Institution (BSI). The goal was to discuss the need for a new organization that would work on creating and sharing global standards. - This meeting led to the creation of ISO in 1947. ISO's main purpose is to develop international standards to ensure that products and services are compatible, safe, and high-quality across different countries and industries. Conclusion: The exact person who had the "first idea" for ISO is not known, but the creation of ISO was a team effort. Important people like Dr. Karl-Otto Böhme and groups such as ISA and ECOSOC played a big role in making it happen. They all worked together to create ISO in 1947 to help make global trade more organized and standardized. I will upload the next post soon, so please wait. #ISO #InternationalStandards #GlobalTrade #Standardization

For Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), committee work is a key foundation to developing and maintaining the technical benchmarks that industries and governments rely on globally. Committees play an essential role in creating guidelines that ensure safety, interoperability, and quality across sectors. However, behind the scenes, these committees face a multitude of challenges—from managing diverse international viewpoints and reconciling conflicting interests to navigating intricate technical details and adhering to rigorous timelines. In our experience, these challenges are not unique to committee work within standards bodies. While the dedication to accreditation is admirable I can’t help thinking seven (if I’ve counted it right) separate safety ones is reflective of how bloated the market is. Seven sets of cost doing all the forms and gathering evidence. Seven membership fees to pay. All of which results in higher costs which need to be passed to the client and not spent on actual conservation work. Surely we can come up with one single system that demonstrates competence?
Reflecting on World Accreditation Day earlier this week, DBR is proud to showcase our suite of industry-approved accreditations. These accreditations display our dedication to fostering a safe, secure, ethical, and sustainable working environment. We strive for continual improvement and are committed to excellence in all we do. World Accreditation Day is a global initiative created by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and ILAC. In the words of IAF, “From fostering trust to driving innovation and supporting sustainability, let's celebrate the role of accreditation in shaping our future!” #dbr #pasthasafuture #worldaccrediationday #wad2024 #iaf #accreditation #compliance International Accreditation Forum Inc
