The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has released its statistics for international congresses held in 2023. The number of conferences held in Japan was 363, ranking 7th in the world, and the number of conferences held in Sendai by city was 15, 6 more than last year, ranking 34th in Asia and 7th among Japanese cities after Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Yokohama, Fukuoka, and Sapporo! Japan and Sendai are becoming recognized on the global stage as suitable and attractive destinations to host international conventions. The ICCA statistics are based on conferences with 50 or more local participants held in three or more countries on a regular rotating basis (excluding bilateral conferences, government conferences, and conferences sponsored by the United Nations). From FY 2024 to FY 2025, Japan’s local governments are leading the Expo International Exchange Program, which fosters continuous cultural and educational exchanges between local communities and Expo-participating countries. 🔗https://lnkd.in/g3sJaSx6 This initiative empowers municipalities to address local challenges and drive regional revitalization through global collaboration. During the SAACI Annual Congress in July 2024, the Southern African events industry came together to talk about the future of the #MICE industry and how it can go #beyondeventing. On the sidelines of the event, patron member South Africa National Conventions Bureau (SANCB) conducted interviews with some of the leaders in attendance, starting with our chairman Jaques Fouche. "In South Africa, there are lots of opportunities to conference in conventional ways, as well as in unconventional ways – outside in the bush with beautiful nature and great weather all around," he said, encouraging international organisations to host their events here. Over 500 million Euro trade volume / 38% International Visitors At the last event held in 2023, 127 exhibitors came together with over 5 thousand visitors from 90 countries in a total area of 11 thousand square meters; the trade fair once again confirmed its feature of being an indispensable international commercial platform for new business connections with a ratio of 40 percent international exhibitors and 38 percent international visitors. Miller Matola, CEO of Millvest Investments, shared his thoughts at the SAACI Annual Congress in July 2024 on the opportunities and growth trajectory of the #MICE sector in Africa. “Africa is increasingly becoming a competitive player in the global events market,” he told patron member South Africa National Conventions Bureau (SANCB) in a video interview, pointing out that Africa currently holds just 2% of the nearly $800 billion global MICE market. “We have organisations such as the African Union, Africa Continental Trade Area Agreement Secretariat and other multilateral organisations that actually help host hundreds of events on the continent. There is an opportunity for African countries to collaborate with these multilateral organisations to grow the mice market on the continent,” he called on the industry.
