"What excites me about adding these two individuals to the board is their deep experience with affordable housing and with diversity, equity & inclusion efforts. Their backgrounds make a natural fit with RALT and our mission, they are both super-excited to join the board and will be a great help to furthering RALT's mission, " RALT Executive Director, Kevin Campbell shared.

"Global instability has caused 27.1 million people to seek refugee status as of 2021. #Refugees are 1.5 to 2 times more likely than local nationals to engage in entrepreneurial activities (Andrew Leon Hanna, 2022.)
While their contribution is significant - with ethnic minorities and new migrants adding an estimated £25 billion per annum to the UK's #economy (Eva Kašperová et al., 2021) - refugees face unique challenges in their entrepreneurial journeys.
These challenges often result in a gap between rich and poor regions, and unequal economic resources within the business ecosystem.
A bespoke, comprehensive support system for refugee #entrepreneurship is essential for social and economic integration.
Beyond the economic benefits, a socially inclusive environment for newcomers is crucial to their integration into the host country.
With more than 130 organisations eager to provide entrepreneurial support, there’s a shroud of confusion around best practices. This ambiguity, coupled with the immediate needs and precarious lives of refugees, magnifies the urgency of refining these support mechanisms." excerpts form the CREME report by Shuai Qin here: https://lnkd.in/e224R_3R

A long way from the south coast… but a journey I’m really glad I made. It was a real privilege to join VONNE (Voluntary Organisations' Network North East), Mayor Kim McGuinness and the packed panels of brilliant folk in Newcastle today to talk through the opportunities and challenges that devolution offers as the region heals after the racist and islamophobic violence that shook Sunderland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and communities of interest and identity across the North East.
We talked a fair bit, covered some harsh realities and landed on some tangible actions… more to do, but there’s nothing like the passion, warmth and kindness of the North East to give us hope for something very different…
🚨 Let’s call it what it is. The cause of the violence comes from 40 years of under investment in living standards and a feeling like these communities don’t matter, combined with a rising tide of toxic rhetoric, and intolerable racism and Islamophobia is the result. We can’t and shouldn’t call it anything else.
🚨It wasn’t a surprise. And sadly, it’s likely to happen again. And we can’t sit idle, we must take action now.
🚨Rooting the solutions in old structures and in a system that routinely overlooks or further disadvantages the people that need the most support is where we’re going wrong.
✅ None of us are working on this alone - we need an interconnected approach that brings people together across organisational and sector boundaries
✅ There’s amazing work going on already, to protect and centre people who are disproportionately impacted by prejudice and violence - let’s connect to it
✅ We must think about this differently, be more curious, creating spaces to share power and crucially, invest in TRUST and RELATIONSHIPS… that’s the way we change the future.
Shout out also to Ngozi Lyn Cole she/her (North East Anti Racism Coalition) , Nancy Pout (Salaam Centre) , Lesley Storey (My Sisters Place), Duncan McAuley (Action Foundation) and the very impressive Yasmin Khan (Halo Project). The work you do is incredible. It was an honour to share the (dodgy) mic with you 🎤

We are committed to redressing the legacy of systemic discrimination in real estate head-on. Through our California Community-Owned Real Estate (CalCORE) program, launched in partnership with Genesis LA, we’re empowering community-based real estate entities to take ownership of local assets, reclaiming spaces for community-driven growth and wealth-building.
Since 2021, CalCORE has supported over 40 community organizations with the training, resources, and knowledge needed to own and manage community spaces. Our fourth cohort, CalCORE 4, recently launched and will focus on commercial corridors.

It was a privilege to launch our Connected Futures program with the Youth Futures Foundation back in July and see two years' worth of partnership-building, research & discovery launch as a program that will help to facilitate better opportunities for young people in Blackpool.
Connected Futures is a £2.3 million investment in Blackpool from YFF to help embed systemic change in our youth employment & education system. Governed and informed by a holistic partnership of stakeholders from across the system, we're targeting our efforts based on specific levers for change which all stakeholders (including young people) have identified as priorities & opportunities.
Perhaps what I'm most proud of within this exciting package of initiatives is the Compass Curriculum. Resulting in part from our Big Education Conversations, Key Stage 4 pupils at some Blackpool schools will be able to choose a range of Level 1 and 2 vocational courses delivered by local FE colleges as an option. Subjects include:
💼 Business & enterprise.
🍽 Catering.
🏗 Construction.
👨🌾 Agriculture.
🐶 Animal studies.
🎮 E-sports.
And many more! It's amazing to see the voices of all stakeholders - including young people - having this impact and making a real, tangible difference on the ground. Having played a large role in instigating and co-leading the Big Education Conversations from a place of lived experience, it is very fulfilling and somewhat therapeutic to see what I - and many other young people - have been through being applied to inform systemic change. If I'd had this kind of provision as a teenager, my story could've been very different - so I'm delighted more young people will have these opportunities. Curriculum changes are something young people have been asking for consistently, so I would really like to thank everyone who helped make this a reality.
To top it all off, youth leadership is weaved as a golden thread through all partnership activity. As part of our bid, we put together a "Youth Leadership Blueprint" which aims to "create a system collectively owned by all stakeholders where power is equitably shared. Solutions are informed by evidence and lived experience to achieve better outcomes for youth employment in Blackpool." That's a BOLD aim, and I'm so pleased that our partnership has signed up to this. By bringing all stakeholders together and sharing power, we compose informed, holistic solutions that command the confidence of all the people they need in order to succeed.
🎥 This video shows our launch event. It is truly heartwarming to hear from the young people of Blackpool about the potential these informed solutions & initiatives have, and the sense of hope it inspires. 👇
Last month, we headed to Blackpool to announce a £2.3m investment as part of our place-based grants programme, Connected Futures. Watch this video to find out more about the Connected Futures partnership.
We were delighted to further shine a light on the regional challenges facing young people across the country, including Blackpool, through the publication of our Youth Employment 2024 Outlook report this week.

Inclusion, community wealth-building and equitable access to opportunities should be at the heart of economic policy. We need to get more resources into the hands of those who have faced systemic barriers to accessing wealth and capital.
We welcome Biju Pappachan as a Social Capital Partners Fellow who leads projects that support economic inclusion and workforce development.
Biju is Executive Director of POV, a charity that promotes diversity in the film and media industries, and a leader in identifying creative-sector solutions that lead to sustainable community economic development, wealth-building and power for historically excluded communities.
Those who create should see the economic benefits from their creations. Building social capital and ensuring better access to equipment and commercial space keeps more wealth in the hands of creators.
“Competition in the market economy has been important for economic growth. But economic models where winners take all and everyone else gets crumbs are destructive to communities, people and the planet,” says SCP CEO Matthew Mendelsohn. “If we want democratic capitalism to survive, it needs to deliver widely shared benefits. Biju's community work helps overcome the systemic barriers to prosperity baked into our current economic model.”
