Sharing from Kayleigh Silver, LSW 's letter in this month's #YourWayHome newsletter: "...The truth is, no one chooses to be homeless. Often, it’s a result of circumstances beyond a person’s control, such as job loss, health crises, or the rising cost of living. While the challenges facing us are immense, so too is the power of community... If you are interested in getting more involved, or learning how to help, here are a few ways: · Support the Your Way Home Fund: grant support to the various organizations in the image above that provide housing and relief to people experiencing homelessness · Become a Continuum of Care Member: Membership in the Your Way Home Continuum of Care (CoC) is free and open to any person or organization committed to ending and preventing homelessness in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. By becoming a member, you will have the opportunity to share your ideas for improving the Your Way Home crisis response system at community meetings, receive funding and news announcements, vote for Governance Board Members, and more. · Donate or Volunteer at a Montgomery County Food Pantry: By leading coordinated action, the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN) strengthens the food security safety net system in Montgomery County." https://lnkd.in/eFNkKXSc

Inspired by a recent presentation with Tamarra A. Coleman for Leadership Kenosha, I reflected on how communities like ours can come together during the holiday season to address rising needs. This article was published in Sunday's edition of the Kenosha News. In 2024, community support is more crucial than ever. Data from United Way of Kenosha County partner IMPACT 211 reveals growing requests for housing, mental health support, and food assistance—a stark reminder of the challenges many local families face. 📊 Key insights from January–September 2024: - Housing assistance accounted for up to 32.3% of 211 calls each quarter. - Mental health service requests rose by 57% in Q3, while substance use calls increased by 55%. - Food assistance demand climbed steadily, stressing the need for vital resources like food pantries. Local organizations, including the Shalom Center, Sharing Center, Inc., Salvation Army, and St. Vincent De Paul Society, have been lifelines for those in need, showing the power of community action. 💛 At United Way of Kenosha County, we’re proud to support IMPACT 211 and other essential programs through our Community Investment grant program. But we can’t do this alone. This holiday season, we invite you to: 👉 Donate to support local programs. https://lnkd.in/gxYw8mBF 👉 Volunteer to make a direct impact. https://lnkd.in/g2XkYaE6 👉 Share resources to connect families in need. https://lnkd.in/gxac_fGG Together, we can offer hope and help create a brighter future for everyone in Kenosha County. 🌟 Let’s make a difference, one act of kindness at a time. 🌟 #LiveUNITED #IMPACT211 #KenoshaCounty #CommunitySupport #HopeForTheHolidays

HYDRATION FOR OUR HOMELESS In the months of going downtown to support our homeless, I’ve noticed a great need for water. While water and hydration are important for everyone, access to clean water is vital for the homeless, helping prevent dehydration, heatstroke, and serious health issues. With limited access to safe drinking water, staying hydrated is crucial for survival, especially in extreme weather. Here’s three ways you can help: 1️⃣ Share. Fill a cooler with water and ice as you drive through town. Where it is safe and convenient, provide a bottle of water to someone in need. 2️⃣ Speak. Speak with your city leaders to discuss ways to support your homeless communities. There may be resources available to help through their knowledge, resources, and network. 3️⃣ Support. Please consider making a donation of water from our Walmart registry or donate $5 via our Givelify page. Please go to our website at pbandjdays.com to support. Let’s ensure everyone has the water they need to stay healthy and safe. #SupportTheHomeless #HydrationMatters #water #sanantonio #homeless #MakeADifference #volunteer

November is National Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Month! This month, let's come together to raise awareness about homelessness and hunger in our communities. It's a time to reflect on the challenges faced by those who lack stable housing and access to nutritious food. Here are a few ways you can get involved: 1. Educate Yourself & Others: Learn about the root causes of homelessness and hunger. Share articles and resources with your friends and family. 2. Volunteer: Offer your time to local shelters, food banks, or community kitchens. Every little bit helps! 3. Donate: Consider donating food, clothing (especially with winter coming), or financial support to organizations, such as SELF Inc., working to combat these issues. https://lnkd.in/eCbncdKA 4. Advocate: Use your voice! Reach out to local representatives and advocate for policies that support affordable housing and food security. Remember, we can all make a difference! Let's spread compassion and kindness this November. #EndHunger #EndHomelessness #CommunityCare

The aroma of home-cooked meals filled the air at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen last week. But it wasn't the regular kitchen staff behind the stove, instead, the volunteer crew was the MHI board! These executives took time out of their busy schedules to cook and serve over 380 hot, nutritious meals to our city's homeless population. Board members chopped vegetables, stirred steaming pots, and dished up hearty portions for every person who came through the line. The care and compassion they showed while preparing and serving each plate was truly heartwarming. As one patron said, "You can tell the food was made with love." The impact of the MHI board's efforts went far beyond full bellies. Their actions sent a powerful message that the homeless and disadvantaged in our community matter. And small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day. As homelessness continues to be a pressing issue nationwide, we need more people getting involved at the local level. If you were inspired by the MHI board's community service, here are a few easy ways you can help: - Volunteer at Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen - Donate to MHI - Give your time or donate goods to MHI outreach programs When we serve our fellow human beings, we uplift our entire community. Let the MHI board's compassion inspire your own actions. https://mhihouston.org/

In challenging times, it’s more important than ever to check on those around us. #Nigeria is facing significant difficulties, and the rising cost of food items is putting a strain on many households. Families are struggling to make ends meet, and the financial burden is creating a lot of stress and uncertainty. This situation calls for empathy and solidarity. Reach out to your neighbors, friends, and family members to see how they are coping. A simple phone call or message can make a big difference, providing emotional support and letting them know they are not alone. If you are in a position to help, consider offering assistance in any way you can, whether it’s sharing a meal, running errands, or just being a listening ear. Community support systems and local organizations are also crucial during these times. Volunteering or donating to food banks, shelters, and other charities can provide much-needed relief to those who are most affected. Advocacy for policies that address food insecurity and economic hardship can also lead to long-term solutions. Together, we can navigate these difficulties with compassion and resilience. By looking out for each other and extending a helping hand, we can foster a sense of unity and hope, even in the hardest of times.

As winter sets in, it’s important to reflect on the hardships those experiencing homelessness face. Cold weather can amplify the challenges of not having a stable, warm place to call home. Here's how we can make a difference: Ways to Help: Support Local Shelters: Weaver House Donate clothing, blankets, and winter essentials like gloves, hats, and coats to shelters or outreach programs in your area. Volunteer Your Time: Weaver House Many organizations need extra hands to serve meals, distribute supplies, or provide care during the winter months. Provide Essential Kits: Create care packages with toiletries, hand warmers, non-perishable snacks, and other items that offer comfort and utility. Raise Awareness: Please share information about resources like shelters or warming centers on social media to make sure those in need can find help. Advocate for Change: Support policies and programs to provide affordable housing and comprehensive care for the homeless population. Small Acts Matter: Even something as simple as offering a warm drink, a meal, or kind words can make a world of difference to someone facing the cold alone. Together, we can help ensure no one is forgotten this winter.

How can we help the homeless without making them uncomfortable? It's about empathy. Sometimes, we want to help, but we forget the importance of dignity. 🫂 Here are some ways to make a genuine impact: • Offer resources, like directing them to local shelters or services, instead of just giving money. • Create care packages with essentials—socks, hygiene products, snacks—that meet their real needs. • Listen if they’re willing to share. Sometimes a respectful conversation is worth more than any material item. • Support organizations fighting homelessness through donations or volunteering. Everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with respect. Let’s be the difference without overstepping boundaries. 💙✨ How do you contribute meaningfully? #homelessness #empathy #dignity #giveback #communitysupport #makeadifference #humanityfirst #helpinghands #socialimpact #carepackages #motivation #inspiration
